Steve I have been carrying dogs in the back of a pick up for around 20 years, mainly in a good sized crate for their safety and a vet bed or similar.

Why do you need to heat it mate?

I've got a Nissan NP300 and had a full BedRug liner put in. It's great for the dogs and they love it, better than the plastic boot liner I had in my old Nissan Pathfinder where they'd slip about. I had a hardtop fitted by Truckman with a sliding bulkhead window and sliding side windows so the dogs stay cool on warmer days. The BedRug liner would make the pickup 'warmer' due to the fact that all the exposed cold metal is covered. The liner is really thick and cosy!!!

Do you not put your dogs in a crate? I would never travel without my dog being restrained, I think having dogs loose in the back of a pick up or large vehicle is asking for trouble.......Personally.

Mike3003 - no we've never restrained any of our dogs, apart from a dog guard in a normal 4x4. They lie down most of the time. They're big flat-coated retrievers so doubt they'd fit in a cage!! We've had dogs for over 30 years and never had any problems.

OK, I appreciate at 30 years you are new to dogs, 👍, sorry, I have 25 years on that, not that it makes any difference. But there are plenty of crates that will house Flatcoats, lovely dogs too.

Sorry, but I strongly believe dogs need to be restrained/restricted, just heavy braking can injure a free dog in the back of a pick up.

I see the OP uses a Lintran crate, probably the best there is for keeping a dog safe. We will have to just disagree, but I just think it a bit irresponsible and unfair on the dog to have it lose in the back of a pick up. 👍

Mike3003. It's just down to personal opinion. A lady in our village has show dogs, she was travelling to a show and broke down, someone then went into the back of her car which is turn pushed her car into a tree and the car caught fire. She managed to get out and they then tried to get to the dogs, the impact had buckled the cages and they couldn't free them, unfortunately they perished.

To answer the original question..I cant see why a heater of the Eberspacher type wouldnt do the job you want.Found in most trucks and a lot of boats these days. They run off a feed from your diesel tank and you can have multiple heat outlets wherever you choose to run a pipe to.You will need a decent battery and the heater needs to have an outside exhaust..only about a one inch diameter pipe. They are controlled by a thermostat and the only downside I know of is they are quite noisy when running.Worth a look.
