We have a caravan with a loaded mass of 1300 Kgs single axle, with a Alko Stabiliser.

What in your estimation would be good new car to tow this van.

taking into account the 85% guideline about kerbweight etc. Therefore car would need to be 1530 Kgs min.

Currently towing with a 65 plate insignia SRI sports tourer auto.

give it your best shot.

Id always advocate lookign for a car you WANT then seeing if variations can tow your van.

I used to have a Bmw 318 saloon and i liked the car but it was a bit weak on uphill towing so i had to work the gearbox. it also limited me on what "vans" i could get in future as it was a light car.
Last year i traded it in and i got a 330d Touring which was heavier and more powerful. now i have a heavier van that i can confidently tow with. not only that i have a really nice driving car for the 95% of the time im not towing.

So id recommend a BMW 330D Touring Xdrive. a 1500Kg caravan is about 81% kerb weight so gives room for options.

Thats the issue i dont know what i want, but have to have something to tow the caravan, if being pushed then more than likely an estate, or SUV, not large SUV like range rover or similar.

Most proably diesel 1.6 - 2.0 ltr considering new diesel are quite powerful in low engine size, but are also quite light.

How they expect us to tow caravans which are getting heavier with lighter cars is beyond me. And i though our van was considerably light!!!.

Am keen on the Hyundai and kia Suv's along with the Honda CRV, quite like the Mondeo estate. Looked at the Skoda OCtavia estate 2.0 ltr diesel and car is too light. Although we did tow with 2006 Focus II estate 2.0 TDCI, (kerbweight 1429 Kgs), but loaded the van ligher so stilL an option.

Oh and it needs to be Automatic.

We have a SsangYong Korando which is a similar size to the other SUV you have mentioned but is considerably cheaper. The engine is a 2.2 diesel which is much torquier (is that a word?) than their earlier 2.0 engine. We had a tow bar fitted foc as part of their Caravan Club offer which they may repeat in 2018.

We have an ELX Auto 4WD which has most of the extras you might like including heated seats and wheel, sat nav, heated lower front screen, leather interior and reversing camera, it's worth a look at £23500 OTR.

As a member of the SS, in all its forms, I would opt for a Skoda Octavia 2.0 litre deisel.
It has torque enough for any slope. We tow down the centre of France and rarely drop into 4th gear, even over Massif Central.
Enormous space in the boot, great comfort inside, 70 mph (40 mph towing), mechanically reliable and cheap to buy.

Can recommend Kia Sorento or Hyundai Santa Fe,had Sorento now have Santa Fe,they are good sized cars with powerful 2.2 td engines.bGreat towcars with good economy and reliability.
Good long warranty too so used ones may well have some warranty left.

So you might go to an SUV, which the last time I looked is still a car.

In my personal opinion a 2.0ltr plus, Auto SUV is the better option for towing, there are many good ones out there as already mentioned.

I am realy fickle when it comes to cars, I have no real loyalty, all except that the Ford Ranger Pick Up’s rule, kings of the road etc. But my main tow car is a 65 plate Ford Kuga 2.0TDI 180bhp, auto, and cannot fault it having done about 4500 towing miles since new. But there are other great SUVs available, such as the Santa Fe, which I would have bought if they had height adjustable passenger seats. So annoying, such a lovely car ❤️

I genuinely think that once you have had an SUV, you will not go back to a Saloon or Estate. So easy to get in and out, spacious with a commanding view.

List what you want from a car, then decide. For example my wife and I sat down and made the following list:

SUV.
25k to 35k.
Diesel.
Minimum 2:0l
Minimum 150bhp. Please don’t let anyone tell you BHP isn’t important!
Height adjustable passenger seat.
Auto. Far superior driving and towing experience.
Leather heated seats.
Sunroof.
Sat nav.
Cruise Control.

This little list is a personal thing, SWMBO demanded the seats, sun roof and height adjustable passenger seat. I was more the tech spec, but what she wants, she gets 😳 But why not!

But none of this gets me away from the fact the the best, most versatile, comfortable, great looking king of the road car, is the Ford Ranger 3.2lt Wildcat. It will do anything. 👍😀😉....Such a shame I don’t have one, mine is the older 2.5 Thunder. 😢😢I love it though.

Yeah did you not know you can tow 10 tonnes with a skoda

Car has to be changed next October as on Contract hire. had a Vx Antara prior to Vx insignia which was a brilliant tow car. (Antara that is)

Now Vx have been taken over by Peugeot, well Peugeots are CRAP. Had a 307 estate and it fell apart as you drove.

Thanks for all comments, all are taken on board, will have a look round a few more dealer over xmas.
