There are many fine towcars out there,(including Peugeot!) I would go for a 2/2.2L diesel, automatic

If you are thinking of the SUV route, also have a look at the Mitsubishi ASX. 2.2l 4wd auto comes in at around the £25k mark. Its a good tough towcar with a decent NCAP rating (check out the SsangYong Korando in this department) and very good resale values plus a 5 year warranty. Mitsubishi always get lousy reviews in the UK, however it is the second most popular SUV in Australia after the Honda (narrowly). Don't think Mitsubishi are prepared to dine out/bribe the reviewers!

I have always had Mondeo not from new though . I find them excellent tow cars and also nice comfortable cars for driving every day . . My last was a 2L Ghia estate built in sat nav . the one I have now is 2.2 L even better but I do miss the estate .
If I could afford it I would have had a Passat estate . But they are out of my price range even second hand .
My mondeos have been very reliable and comfortable . And have always towed well apart from our Bailey Rimini that did not do so well . It may have been the shape of the van .
If I was changing I would still have a mondeo . Unless I won the lottery .

I’ll second that. Mondeo all the way. Cheap to buy if your looking for a second and car. You can pick up a 4 year old 1 owner full history one for well less than half new list price. Best bit is no main dealer services to pay for, every mechanic in the country can work on a Ford which keeps running cost down.

As for towing the 2.0 140 tdi could move a mountain, and the boot will take everything including the kitchen sink.

If your on a contract hire agreement the down side is they can work out quite dear due to the heavy depreciation and you may find you would get a better deal with VW, Audi or BMW.

The Passat estate is brilliant. We like it so much we're on our third, contract hire actually worked out cheaper than Mondeo estate and Volvo V60 (perhaps due to lower predicted depreciation) and we've used our current one (2015 2.0 TDI 150bhp) to tow a 1250kg caravan through France to the Swiss Alps, and around Ireland.

The Skoda Superb is mechanically identical and slightly cheaper but also slightly nastier, especially the interior. Fine if you like that sort of thing but in my opinion the VW is worth the extra.

Any similarly sized estate (Mondeo, Insignia, Toyota Avensis) with a 2-litre diesel engine should also be fine. Or if you prefer an SUV, VW Tiguan, Ford Kuga, Honda CRV or anything that size from just about any other car company in the world.

I'd suggest test driving a few, seeing which you prefer as a solo drive and taking it from there.

Take look at Motorpoint in Derby they have some amazing savings on Landrover Sports and Evoque, May as well get a proper tow motor then if you get stuck in mud on site no problems, and good resale value.

wow i dont understand why Mitsubishi get bad reviews. how many mitsubishis do you ever see on a hard shoulder or breakdown truck? i have seen planty of VWs (especially tourans) on breakdown trucks

i am on my second Mitzy now. i had a outlander GX4 before and it was an outstanding car. never a bit of trouble, it kept its finish, towed well cost me very little to maintain (only servicing and tyres).

i now have a shogun, its quite agricultural and its a top spec SG4, a rangerover it aint but i think its awsome. there must be some reason the Aussies love their pajeros.

dont overlook Mitsubishi.

BTW free at last my wife wants to change her Zafira and i am tryng to edge down the route of an ASX or outlander she really liked driving my outlander.

I had a CR-V 2.2 diesel and decided to update to a new car, I had Japanese for years. I had a very good deal on a new Skoda Superb it was the last of the old model 2015.I have never regretted it, it tows better than the CR-V did really stable and economical. The new ones have even better fuel economy and more power.

Have a look at the new pug 3008,its similar in style to a range rover evoque, the interior is a class above anything out there. Looking at quotes from lex autolease that my company uses the pug is much less to lease than a mondeo or insignia of a similar cost, the same goes for the mazda 6 which is being updated this year.
They're my shortlisted cars for my iminent change.

I think the Rav4 is a good choice, ultra reliable nice specs and they look good, and if you are buying new the hybrid will tow what you need and it will be future proof too.
Theres loads of other choices too Kuga, Mondeo BMW 3 series. Skoda has plenty of power but I don't like the look of any of them I think they would all look better in a skip

just looked at the RAV4 2.5 Hybrid, and it will not pull the Skin off a rice pudding. 850 Kgs max braked and 750 Kgs Max un braked.

looking at Nissan X-trail, Hyundai Tuscon, Kia Sportage, Ford kuga

Possible VW range also.

its a mine field trying to find a car to pull the van, with A Powder, B Torque, C Weight (not necessarily in this order) please don't complain..

Peugeot 3008 SUV, not heavy enough to have comfortable and stable driving.

van is 1300 Kgs and car needs to be +1530 Kgs kerbweight to have 85% Ratio Car to Van. (not including luggage, occupants, fuel etc, etc.

:-)

We are very happy with our Kia Sorento - which also have an adjustable height passenger seat in the 2 more expensive models - very comfortable, tows brilliantly, decent mpg and low running costs with 3 years fixed price servicing and the 7 year warranty.
