After deciding to change from a folding camper,to a caravan,setting up the folder is now hard work,we were looking at vans for us.So ok,found some nice vans,but have now discovered that a lot of modern small cars struggle to pull larger vans.Why is this?Our newish C3 picasso will only pull just over 800kg!So anolder car is required.So much for modern cars,too much emission control strangling the engine???

You have the wrong model. The 90bhp diesel manual C3 Picasso has a max tow weight of 1200kg. This being the recently discontinued older model. Other factors come into play like max towbar weight & size of car. Indicated max tow weight of any car is just a technical figure arrived at max weight car can actually tow from a standstill. It does not indicate the car is suitable for towing caravan of that weight.

I don’t think the current new C3 & Aircross models are really intended as serious towcars anyway which is why they have low tow weights. They look more like pretty ‘fun’ cars to me. If you want a new car then plenty other similar priced Cits, Berlingo for example are much more suitable towcars & the older model C3s Picassos are still available at very cheap prices.

With suitable diesel C3 Picasso then probably a caravan of around a tonne all up weight would be ok. Car/Caravan combination needs to look right ie caravan not obviously too big for car even if technically weights are within the law. Many modern smaller cars have more towing capabilty than ever before provided you have the right(ie diesel)model but it does not mean they are necessarily the right choice for a large caravan.

more to the point,you should not have towed a pathfinder with that car.
