Wow, great news. I intend getting a newer Ford Ranger pick up in the next year or so. I will be looking for a 2 or 3 year old 3.2 ltr Wildtrack, and it looks like I could get a good deal.

No that is what you call a game changer.

Top 10 best selling cars in UK last yr apart from Qashqai were mostly Fiesta sized. The choice for cars of this size has always been mainly petrol. Larger SUV size cars are still almost universally diesel & used prices of these will still be better for diesels as buyers of large cars when older want cheap in purchase price & fuel costs.

All large cars depreciate fairly massively just because of their high initial cost. Buyer will lose £25k on a £50k car but only £5k on a £10k car after a few yrs. What there is is an increase in sales of smaller cars mostly petrol & less sales of larger cars mostly diesel. So you can call that a “collapse” in the diesel market if you want or just a “collapse” in the larger car market.

The separate issue might be the abysmal prices offered by dealers at trade in time using diesel as an excuse which will not reflect in the continued demand for larger diesels & forecourt prices.

Well it will be around 2028 when I finally take the plunge and retire at the grand age of 68, well that's the plan anyway, as my state retirement age is 2026.

Anyway come the time, it will be my first time to own my own car since 1985.

I really do wonder what I will be buying, will it be a 2lt Diesel Tiguan maybe 6 years old that I can get for £1000 or will it be the 2lt Petrol model for £2000 of the same vintage.

I doubt it will be either, the likelihood is that it will a 3 year old Tesla Model "Y" for about £10,000 with 500 miles range per charge.

It really has got me thinking.

I think that what will be happening in 2028 is anyone's guess. In the 1960s many people believed that by 2000 we would all have helicopters or flying cars. I will be 79 by 2028, if I'm still around, and I think my vehicle of choice will probably be an EV. A mobility scooter!

Francais I think you best get saving now, a 7 year old Tiguan is 7 k now and a petrol 6 years old is 9k another 10 years of inflation on today’s rrps will probably make them a good 50k new

The rv for the Tesla will be well over the top as it’ll cost nothing to run and still have 5 years of battery warranty left.

This month's Practical caravan magazine has a direct comparison of petrol and diesel VW Tiguans. Spoiler - the performance of both when either towing or driven solo was much the same, but the petrol did 10mpg less. That's a huge difference.

Regarding the OP's question - how much towing versus solo driving are you going to do? If you're going to do a fairly low and mostly urban business mileage, and aren't paying for the fuel yourself, go petrol (or hybrid if that's an option for you). If you're doing a high motorway mileage, a sizeable amount of towing and have to pay for any of your personal fuel, then diesel is still the answer.

In the grand scheme of running a new car 10mpg difference isn’t worth worrying about. For average mileage its a few hundred quid, but to save this you need to spend more on the diesel version.

I seem to remember reading that the next model of VW Golf's Mk8 will be using a 1lt 3 cylinder petrol engine with Twin Electric Turbos

If that comes to fruition, I guess that will be my next company car, not an EV.

With such a small engine and Twin Turbo's to boost up the power, such a vehicle will tick most of the box's regarding emmisions and tax implications.

Although I guess the car will almost be useless for towing, and probably will only just about lug it's own body weight around.

Not sure what condition a 1lt engine will be in, after I have thrashed it around as a rep for two years, and hand it back for another with 70k miles on it.

For those buying such a vehicle as used, it will probably be the case of new engine before it hits 100k miles.

Of course on the upside for the used car buyer, you will be able to buy a 3 year old VW Golf for around £1000, not good news for those that buy new privately.

Edit = Wow the 1lt Petrol VW Golf with 3 cylinder engine is already on the market now, just hope our fleet manager dosn't find out about it!

On the upside the unbraked towing weight is 640kg but the braked towing weight is just 1300kg compared to 1500kg of the TDi Golf I drive now, and that pretty much rules out towing a caravan, unless under 1000kg I guess.

Francais..my son has a 1.0 3cyl turbo focus, if it wasn't for towing I would be happy driving it anywhere, its quicker than my 163hp mondeo and a lovely engine to drive with. However around town with a heavy foot he only returns 28mpg!

There isnt a single ev on the market suitable for towing a caravan and I dont see one coming soon either. Even if you can physically hook it up the range will be dire. My hybrid can run on electric alone, the range drops by 35% just because the weather is cold let alone having to tow 1500kg. Put the heater or air con on it drops again. The car cant reach much more than 60% of the claimed range as like mpg these are based on best case scenario.

Add to that the ridiculous cost of something like a Tesla x and it’s essy to see why we are in the majority still using fossil fuel. Interesting to see the japs are investing in hydrogen fuel cell tech.

28mpg from a 1 ltr engine?? Think I'll stick to my ancient Volvo! 2.5 litre turbo-diesel, 18 years old and with 166,000 on the clock, does 40mpg around town and nearly 50mpg on a run. Doesn't do much less with a caravan on the back.

Ford have issues with the 1 ltr 3 cylnder engine, due to such high compression once the head blows the engine is finished, Thats the problem with these small engines producing high power. this will be a big problem for ford down the line

Yes I can certainly see that. I bet it's a very high revving engine too, with most of the power at the top-end of the rev-band.

Wouldn't be any use to me I'm afraid. Much too small and light.
