Just a thought on the VS dedicated electrics and how the towing vehicle knows you are now towing something.
How does it know the difference between a huge twin axle caravan or a small cycle crack with a trailer board??
My guess it doesn't.
Have had both systems on my last 2 works VW Transporter, the only thing I have noticed between them is with the VW dedicated reprogrammed, a stock picture came on the sat nav screen of the back of the van front of the caravan when in reverse....
Really annoyed a work college who tows a horsebox with his, every time he reversed would shout at the screen, it's a at #$; at $#& horsebox!!!!

The issue is this. Bypass systems were very good, fitted a number over the years, fit them properly and they are very good.
BUT
Vehicles had hard wired lights, a 12v feed and a relay that turned them on and off. They were element bulbs and the vehicles monitored the current to make sure the bulb had not blown. All was good.
NOW
Vehicles have CAN enabled microprocessors that drive an array of LEDs. The control of these is vastly more complicated with total monitoring of the bulb performance. In the past it did not matter that you put a dirty relay coil across the light feed, the current difference was smaller than the tolerance of the bulb element. Modern light clusters are so complicated that stray bit of current or ground path will cause it to not understand what the hell is going on. This can cause issues.
Also, if the dedicated wiring is fitted then the vehicle is correctly wired. It needs to be told that you have fitted this additional wiring and this is done by coding the body controller so it now knows it has the ability to tow. So why does it need to know this, well it monitors the towing circuits and if you hitch up to then it prepares to re-asses the adaptives and work out how to keep you safe. It enables the statutory warnings on the dash. It can also can change the braking, handling,cooling, ride height, steering response and driving map to accommodate your new driving dynamics. It is clever enough to work out the size and stability of your load and adapt to the very best driving setup. Some really are that clever, and I have probably forgotten some of the benefits.
The future, well there are many thoughts but the 13pin connector has a spare. This has been talked about as a possible LIN bus, a bi-directional comms bus to allow the car to talk to the caravan. This would allow the caravan to to use the cars stability program to keep it stable, the only issue is that the caravan is not clever enough to utilize this, yet.
So what are the possibilities, a caravan with full ESP and CAN controlled lights. A security feature that only releases the brakes if the car is coded to the van, electronic breaking, Control of caravan equipment from the tow vehicle, TPMS on the tow vehicle systems, rear cameras, reverse parking assist with trailer, rear prox sensors?

My advice as I had three tow bars fitted, check out a local independent company, I stay way from Halfords, do a web search to find one.
