Thinking of converting a VW t5/t6, anyone tow a caravan with one of these.... how does it tow?

This post sent a shudder down my spine and brought back some bad old memories. Many years ago I tried to tow a caravan with a VW van, and it was one of the worst towing experiences ever. It was a 1971 VW van, the old air cooled "bay window" type, and the caravan was a Sprite Musketeer. The slightest gradient in the road or head-wind, and I had to change down at least one gear! My MK2 Cortina had pulled it without hardly even noticing it.

However, things have moved on a great deal since then, and today's VWs are very different. I am sure you will have no problems.

Colin

Depends on the engine the actual model and your licence.

It could be one of those it will get there eventually but the journey may not be a relaxing one.

Certainly needed something to heat me up Ray! That darned thing had no heater either. Windscreen used to ice up on the inside!

Always amazed me how some people managed to drive all over Australia with one, yet mine broke down if it went more than 5 miles from home, or so it seemed.

Back in real world get the 140bhp diesel & it will tow just fine. It will need some weight in the back but a camper conversion with gear & passengers in the back will give you that.

Yes I agree Opensauce, today's VWs are a very different beast to the one I had. A modern one would have no problem.
