I passed my test fairly recently so only have a category B licence so I need to down plate a trailer in order to be able to tow it legally. the problem is I think that the trailer is pre-1982 so does not have a VIN plate with manufacturers details or serial numbers on. currently the MAM of the trailer would be worked out using the tyres max load which is 2120kg. how do I down plate this trailer as all blank vin plates I have seen have serial numbers and model numbers on which I do not know, can I just leave blank?
thanks
If there's no plate on it, and only the tyres give any indication, could you fit lower rated tyres? Interesting problem, as I used to have a trailer that I built myself, hence no plate. I didn't have the problem personally though as my licence covered it.
It isn't the tyres that will designate the max allowed weight, but the suspension capacity, so you need to look at those and see if they are marked.
Let us know what they are and we may be able to suggest an answer.
If trailer is old then blank plate with suitable gross weight stamped on would be sufficient. As there is no mot or registration for small trailers one can put what one likes on an old trailer provided axle weights as stamped on axles or tyre load weights are not exceeded.
