Sorry, Lyciac, I don't think it was the fridge that flattened your battery.
Assuming your car is wired correctly the car battery does not enter the equation. The fridge only runs off the car's alternator circuit ( and then only when the engine is operating at normal driving speed.
Simply switch the fridge to "12V" before starting the car and off you go !.
Nothing else to do -- power will go to the fridge when you start driving.
