We have just changed to a 2017 Nissan X-trail as our tow car and need some good towing mirrors.
Can anyone recommend a set that will definitely fit our X-Trail and perform as they should?

Unless someone specifically has a 2017 X-Trail, it will all be assumptions.
I personally use Milenco Aero and have always thought them to be very good.
But to know if they would definitely fit your vehicle you would need to find an accessory shop that would let you try and put them on.

As well is two words!
How does a sage know everything about everything? or does he? or does he just think he does?
Remember, if you buy something you bought it, not brought it.
The reason for stating the 2017 is that the X Trail has changed shape a couple of times.
I think your suggestion is a good one.
However I did try a large dealer near to me and they were not prepared to open any packaging!
My son has an Xtrail and uses milenco's but says they are not a good fit and wobble so badly he has a string tied to them in case they fall off!
I dont want to buy an expensive mistake.

Well that's their loss of a potential sale, poor service.

Why do you need extra mirrors, the vehicle ones will be wide enough , hook the van up and you will see

Are you speaking from personal experience, or just you usual i.e. no substance.
You do come away with some absolute twaddle at times, nearly always, Boab.

Almost as wide just doesn't cut it I'm afraid. Again more bad advice from the cab driver.
From the diagram posted above mirrors are clearly required, end of.

Milenco are good, you can get different rubber clamps for some cars due to the shape of the mirror. The standard ones fit our Santa Fe, but they do shaped ones for Sorento-(our last car) and certain others. On their website and cheap and easy to swap.
Ours had to go on the lower edge of the Hyundai due to small gap at the top, on Kia went on top.
Thanks Rustyfrog for clarification of THE LAW and proving Skoda bob wrong again!

As wise as Skoda Bob is, I'm afraid his is the worst advice I've read on these threads. Please ignore it.
If the rozzers ever decide to pull you over, perhaps at a service area, as they do sometimes, you will find that having a car and mirrors that are "almost as wide" as your 'van is an actual motoring offence, as rustyfrog's informative post points out.
In a fairly recent legal case the owner of a Range Rover argued Bob's point in court, and lost. While Milenco obviously have an interest in this, they have found there is no non-commercial vehicle that is legal without additional mirrors.
For me, the best mirrors are Milenco Grand Aeros, used horizontally for widest view.

Thanks to all for your info.
It sounds like the Milenco Aeros are top of the list for all of you.
(except Bob) No offence I hope!
With Bobs view in mind, I just did a simple test of measuring the width of my X-Trails mirrors, tip of nearside mirror to tip of offside mirror. That came to 7'8".
I think I can see Bobs point.
Most c/vans are around 7'6" wide so you therefore still have 1" of mirror each side. covering the length of the van.
Not so sure on the legal side, but I want more!
