Can`t say they make any difference, other than giving you a larger loading margin which if you have a heavy load can`t be a bad thing.

Black round things, possibly stiffer on the sidewalls than non XL tyres.

They are just a premium radial like any other. Avons are a good make. UK made & usually cheaper than Michelin etc. I had them on my last Berlingo & they lasted just as long as the original Michelins so go for them I would.

I think XL's are just a marketing gimmick...
An excuse to stick a few quid more onto the price of a tyre...
If you wanted proper extra loading tyres, go for commercial tyres - the ones with a 'C' after the numbers...
------------- Damned if I do...
Damned if I don't!!!!

Who knows?! We have a Ford Galaxy that gets packed to the gunnels for camping so I reckon the car is at max operating weight, so the extra load tyres can only be a good thing.
The way I look at it, if there was an accident and your car was at max weight the insurance could consider whether the right tyres were fitted. The previous owner of my car had put normal tyres on but I have now swapped them all out for extra load tyres as I think that is what a Galaxy is meant to use.
Also if you are at heavier loading I would hope/expect that extra load tyres would be less prone to a blowout but I have no idea if tie is true. I just put the extra load tyres on as there is very little difference in price and it is one less thing to worry about!

Your current tyres will have a load & speed rating after size on sidewall something like 93v provided the tyres equal or exceed that then ok.

XL denotes a heavier load rating and stiffer sidewall. Better for load carrying but may give a firmer ride.
A lot of modern SUVs and people carriers need a higher rated load than a standard car but have similar running gear so need a XL tyre as standard rated tyres are rated too low.
No issue in using an XL tyre on a lower load rated OE fitment.
