We are in the process of buying a new Ford Ranger and need it wired to tow our caravan. The dealer is telling us the only solution is to have dual electrics. We can see in the Ranger brochure it is possible to purchase a dealer fitted kit which will then activate all the pins required to operate internal lights and fridge.

Has anyone experienced the same issues and can offer advice to a concerned caravanner

the dealer doesn't know what he is talking about.the same wires that go into 2x7 pin plugs can go into 1 single 13 pin.

I dont see the issue, have i missed something?

To tow a caravan you only need single electrics or some of the pins in a 13pin socket wired.

Its optional to have the 2nd socket or extra pins wired for the twin electrics, which appears to be what you want ie have the towcar charge the caravan battery and run the fridge whilst your towing.

The fridge will only run when the towcars engine is running and the cars battery is charging.

The way i have read your message is you asked for the battery charging/fridge options and they said you need the twin electrics to do that not the single electric option.

Have i missed something or misread?

Thank you diesel Steve that is what we thought .

Grampain91. Just to clarify we only want to have one pin which will have the capability both of us require to run fridge when the engine is running, plus all the standard elements you expect for towing. The dealer is saying because the electrics in the Ranger are wired for European use then we can’t have this and instead will need dual electrics. We do not want dual electrics. We have seen an option in The Ranger brochure for a dealer fitted kit which should solve this problem, but not getting any joy on this with the dealer. I posted with the hope that others towing with a Ranger May have some resolution. Thanks

13 pin electrics is the standard for new caravans, has been for a while.
The option you have seen may just be a wiring kit to provide the extra supplies.
Modern canbus systems cannot have wiring spliced in.

A repuable towbar fitting company would know what is needed, sounds like the salesperson does not!

When we bought our Santa Fe the dealer asked which type of wiring connector we required. They used a specialist nearby, who does fitting for many dealerships.

Hi,
I have a 2017 Wildtrack with factory towbar, when new it didnt have power to the fridge & charging although I requested it on order
I was made aware of a Ford service bulletin that fixed that by adding a small piece of wiring loom under the passengers seat,
Ford did this for free,
I have a new Wildtrack on order due Sept, & Dealer is telling me that I need to pay for the part/loom as Ford no longer offer fully wired as an option
been told it will cost around £20
