As above never trust online figures. The previous owner of a caravan may have had it replated to a high gross weight due to adding something to it.
Parkers once listed a tiny peugeot 106 with a 1000cc engine as being able to tow 2 tons. The car weighed half that.
The towing matches could just be down to some basic calculations.
BHP / Weight = tow ability. May not take into account the powerband of that engine and the gearing.
A small engined turbo car, may not have enough torque until 2000rpm, so you need to slip the clutch at 2000 - 2200rpm to pull away. But at 2300rpm you just spin the wheels.
Stay well within the towing limits. The maximum tow weight for a car is just the max weight the car can pull away on a hill without risking a warranty claim. It maybe an awful towcar but it passes that test so there is the figure.
The recommended 85% is a good start, but plenty of cars where that would be an illegal match.
Even owners views will vary, one will say yeah it tows fine where another will say its awful. Dropping to less than 40mph on a motorway incline maybe OK for some where others will say never again.
