I would have imagined M5 to M4, M4 to M25, then M25 to M20. I live by the M25/M20 junction and know that part of the route relatively well, the M20 is usually a dream to drive down, the last part of the journey from the M20 I would do via Folkestone then the A259 rather than short cut across the Romney Marshes. You have no need to use the Dartford Crossing, from the M4 you use the south side of the M25 go under, not above London. There's a fantastic pub called The Botolph Bridge on the marshes just a couple of miles from Hythe. Have fun.
thanks, didn't think of having to use the tunnel, but nice to know of an ale house recommendation, we wouldn't bother with the M5 as it is going backwards first, would aim for the A303 then onward to M3 and up
to more or less where you are suggesting

When I go to Cheddar from the Winchester area I use the A303. I would suggest using the A303 from Cheddar then onto the M3, then south of London on the M25, then M26 and M20.
If you want the scenic route you may want to come off the A303 onto the A34, then the M3 and M27 then the A27 all along the south coast...or the A272 through Petersfield.
Lots of choices.

my brother has suggested "the scenic route" as you say, we did this for around 6 years while our son lived in Brighton, Chichester area roundabouts tend to be a nuisance, but are considering it, went the Petersfield two or three time when we had the folding camper, bit too slow, even moreso if you get caught up with some army movements , but thanks
