Im thinking of buying a BMW 5 series estate 2.0d to tow a caravan weighing just under 1400kg fully loaded.
For around the same money as the BMW I can get my hands on a similar aged VW Passat All track which obviously has 4 wheel drive capability.

Can I ask if anyone owns either or has experience of these vehicles for towing ?

I was certain on the BMW but the VW has muddied the waters ?!?!!!

Thanks

What year? What engine? What gearbox?

When did you pass your driving test?

Year, around 2013/2014

Both 2.0 diesel.

Both auto.

I'm well old so not affected by the B + E thing.

I like the look of both cars, both similar prices and obviously I can't tow with a car I haven't bought yet so just wondered if anyone had used either car to tow ( and general driving ) and liked it, hated it etc.

Thanks

We tend not to use sites that much, prefer to use meets, THS's and 5 van sites so most of the time on grass even in winter. I have a Skoda Octavia Estate 4x4 2.0TDi (manual), same system /engine has the VW alltrack, Haldex Traction but just a little lighter in weight. Good on wet and muddy grass, Haldex puts around 90% power to the front wheels and around 10% to rear in normal running and will transfer more power to the rear as and when needed. My van is 1,318kg so get around 33 - 37 mpg depending on road. All I can say is that the VW engine is good with a good torque band and plenty of pulling power.

Whilst a 5 year old diesel is always a gamble, I'd be more comfortable with a BMW torque converter auto box than a VW DSG, especially out of warranty.

Don't assume low mileage is a good thing. A 5 year old diesel car with 100,000+ miles could well be a better proposition than one with less than half that.

Condition is key, as is lots of paperwork and evidence that jobs have been done. These are expensive vehicles and need money spending on them regularly.

At 5 years you may be coming to the time when expensive long term jobs need doing.

VW has a cambelt. Check when it is or was due. Was it done, was the water pump changed? If it is due negotiate the cost - £300+ for the work.

DSG gearbox needs oil changes on a regular basis. Ensure they have been done.

4x4 system may also need servicing.

Both will have DPFs - condition of which cannot be determined easily.

The VW is likely to be rarer than the BMW.

A few people, on another forum, have the Alltrack and are full of praise for them.

I'd prefer something higher up.
Just wish VW/Seat did a 4WD, RHD, Sharan/Alhambra.

I have a 2013 520D Touring, should have swapped it 2 years ago but couldn`t be bothered as I can`t fault it.

Mine is a manual (but the auto is a lovely thing), just coming up to 124K on the clock and it pulls like a train. Never put any oil or water (other than screenwash) in it, and it averages 47mpg plus week in, week out. It will easily do 50+ but I tend to press on a bit for work.....

Just got back from South Wales and Dorset, towing 1570 kgs, leccy bikes on the roof, air awning & inflatable canoes in the boot, second fridge on back seat with recliner chairs, averaged 29.2mpg which I was pleased with as again my speed has a tendency to creep up where conditions allow. The self-levelling air rear suspension comes into its own with a lot of weight in and 90kgs on the hitch. The car also came with lots of toys, which although not essential make life a little more enjoyable.

My second 5-series, I`ve had little to moan about (other than a botched towbar fitting by a well-known manchester company that trashed the electrics on the first one causing £1200 of damage that they would cover - can`t say who as it gets you banned on here), and I previously had 3 Passats (the first was OK, the second one absolutely brilliant, the third utter garbage - riddled with faults and needing 2 replacement engines in 72K miles).

As has been suggested, take a drive in both and see which you prefer. I like firmer suspension so I went with an M-Sport which again gives a little more control when towing, but many prefer something softer.

Both will serve you well.

How often are you likely to drive/tow over soft or wet ground? If the answer is "most winter months" go for 4-wheel drive. If it's "rarely", go for either the BMW or a 'normal' Passat estate, for which there'll be a much wider choice.

I can't comment on the BMW 5-series except that one won a 'Towcar of the Year' award a few months ago. However, we're on our third Passat estate (a 2015 2.0 TDI 150bhp) and basically it's brilliant. Over the last 2 and a bit years it's done 75k miles, roughly 9000 of which have been with a 1250kg caravan behind and nothing - by which I mean not one single thing - has gone wrong with it. Our first one went up to 138k with no major issues.

As others have said, high mileage needn't be a concern but anything less than a full service history should. The engines and gearboxes will keep going for a long time if looked after but can fail expensively if neglected.
