Not just clearance issues, your towbar will have a noseweight limit. Thats the downforce on the ball itself.
This affects the rear axle loading.
Add a few bikes and its carrier soon adds up. Lots of options for carrying bikes on an A-frame or carrier on top of the trailer.
Depends on the cars limits and your budget and storage. A bigger trailer will take bikes inside but do you have space to store it?

Most trailers have an option for a roof bar attachment. You can then add a bike carrier to the roof bars. Not cheap as the trailer manufacturers have it sown up, but is a good, flexible solution.

Once you buy the bars for the trailer you can usually pick up cheap Bike carriers from as little as £10 each second hand, you can deffo do it on the cheap especially buying out of the season

I considered options, A frame bike racks are expensive, and you then don't have a bike rack for light car, we selected the Maypole we had to reverse two bolts so head to car nuts to rear, otherwise easy fit. once plate is fitted behind tow ball removing and fitting rack needs no tools, the previous version we had needed a spanner.
It was a close fit, put the original protector plate back on upside down to give extra 1/8" so rack would not touch car bumper even with some flexing.
I have in the past used racks on the roof, however only because tandem was too long to go across back of car, it it was not easy lifting bike onto roof, even standard bikes.
With towing as well you are limited to hanging rack at back of car, if you want a rack that the wheels sit on then has to be A frame.
Problem with hang on rack is car exhaust, so easy to get tyre near to exhaust and kill the tyre, we have done it. Also the bikes can hang at a strange angle where there is no cross bar.
Google hitch mounted bike rack seems to find more than towbar mounted.

i may be selling a trailer, with a hard roof and an extendable draw bar (up to 4 foot if i remember)
it was rebuilt about 3 years ago and done about 600 miles since.
has a chequer plate floor and will carry 500Kg.
sides fold down when not in use too.
im on way out to work, but if you want pics, let me know.
