After a few days away in Dorset and an incident involving a car,a handbrake not fully on,a slope getting steeper,a picnic bench and some saplings I now find Ihave to have a different car.I looked at a 2.0 litre 180 hp ford kuga but the wife decided it was too powerful, she's a nervous driver, the van is a Bailey 462 mtpl 1325kg.So we have bought the 150 hp titanium kuga. Since buying it I have spoken to a family member who seems to think it is a lightweight,so have I done wrong will it tow the van.Nagging doubt has now appeared,I'm picking car up on Tuesday, next weekend I'm off back to fetch the van and a week later off to Norfolk.Any Kuga drivers with thoughts about this?
In my view a car is never too powerful, it's the way you drive it. It's always better to have the power when you need it especially towing a caravan rather than have limited power which can be a daunting experience when you're stuck behind lorries and struggle to overtake. A bad decision to I think to go for the 150 hp. in my view. I test drove a 1.5 Kuga diesel only a few weeks ago and no thanks, it's got about as much power as a donkey rather than a horse.
It only produces 180bhp at max throttle, if you dont push the throttle to the floor and dump the clutch it will drive exactly the same as the 150bhp car.
When towing that extra 30bhp could be the difference between having to change gear on an incline and cruising up with little effort.
Thinking about the lightweight their van is a 4 berth and they must think that every van is the same, but they've said it and Nagging Doubt appeared every time I looked out of the window it was there much like the advert for Swindon insurance.
If you can find out the kerbweight of the 150 bhp. version then that's all you need to know as you can then do your own maths and calculate the percentage match against the MTPLM of 1325 kgs.
If you search ford kuga on here I actually weighed one about 2 year ago on a weight bridge, 2 wd version I’m sure it was about 1700 kgs,
I can’t check as I’m using my phone not a laptop other wise I’d post the link for you
You know Nagging Doubt is a pain, the seed has been placed in my mind.I used to tow the van with a Vectra we struggled a bit at times I think the clutch was on it's way out. It's just that I really needed someone to say yeah you'll tow that no problems.Next weekend we are off to fetch the van a 400 mile round trip, there might be an appearance by Nagging Doubt on Sunday morning about 6-00 am but after 5-6 miles they'll be gone
I tow with Kuga 2 litre 150 HP diesel. It weighs at just under 1700 KG so not exactly a light weight.
It feels far more powerful than 150 HP and is the smoothest engine that I have ever come across easily pulling away in any gear from 1500 revs,I really do like the Kuga, getting one is one of my better decisions.
I feel sure that after towing for a few miles you will be pleasantly surprised.
I think the biggest nagging doubt is the fact that you said that she's a nervous driver plus stating that a vehicle with a bigger BHP is too powerful. Anyone that has passed their driving test should be confident and capable of driving any vehicle in any of the classes stated on their driving licence so all it takes is just a little less pressure on the accelerator. However, towing a caravan takes a lot of confidence and concentration so having a nervous driver behind the wheel doesn't exactly help even if you have the perfect match in tow.
Thanks for all the replies I'm now feeling that I have made the right choice, rather than listen to other people I should asked the question and listened to the answers from people who know what they are talking about.
