Wondering if someone can help thanks. We have a Bailey pageant champagne 1997, our BMW x5 4.4 has been the car we used for towing. Recently we bought a C4 as a cheap runaround, had a few problems with the x5 and wondered if we fitted a tow bar on the C4 would it be ok. I see the caravan says 998kg and I think the C4 says max 1300, but what about the weight of the contents of the caravan.
Not an expert by any means, but that sounds a bit underpowered to me. If you are a member of either of the two main clubs they both have a matching service. If not, I'm sure there are other online matching services.
You need to know the MTPLM of the caravan and the kerbweight of the car and try to stick to the 85% guideline. The caravan details should be on the plate by the door and the car weights should be in the handbook and possibly on the V5.
The 998 kgs. would more likely be the MIRO (unladen weight) which is what the caravan weighs when it leaves the factory without any other equipment on board. You need to know what the MTPLM (fully laden weight) is and calculate the match exactly as Rob advised (above post).
the car has a nose weight limit of 50kgs! you also need to check the towing limit on the car as unfortunately the max on these is very very low, from memory it was around 1100kgs fully loaded, which for your caravan 1262kgs
Could the citroen c4 you mentioned tow a camping trailer? We're changing cars and wondering if a c4 would pull a small trailer Erde 122 size with extended sides? If anyone can tell me how to dind out that would be cool, thanks!
Yes it will tow a trailer but the exact weight it will tow depends on the model of car. What's the weight of the trailer? 350Kg? If so that should be ok but best to check with the details on the car or in the handbook just in case it's one of those odd models that is not type approved.

I would have thought that if a model wasn't type approved for towing, it would be very difficult if not impossible to get a tow bar for it. However, I would think that most cars would be ok towing a small lightweight camping trailer. I have seen a Smart towing a trailer.
Thanks for help guys, I will check the weight if the trailer, even full to the top it's not at it's capacity weight wise, so it's just if the car can pull it .
Yep, done that, according to the table I found maximum unbraked is 1100kg....way more than our trailer would be even full up, so it's all good. Thanks guys!

I would be very surprised if the unbraked weight you quote is anywhere near accurate, as it's way more than my Hyundai Tucson 2 litre is rated to pull unbraked. I'd be surprised if the unbraked weight limit for your car was much more than 600kg. Id be surprised in fact if the braked weight for your car was as high as 1100kg.
The max legal weight for an unbraked trailer is 750kg so I think Colin's guess of 600kg is probably about right but you need to check your particular vehicle to make sure. We can only guess at the figures as we don't know the details of your particular vehicles.
Rob
PS: A quick Google shows a max weight of 400kg for an Erde 122
Ahhh, I have rechecked.....Colin21 you are correct, unbraked weight is around 650kg, lowest, depending on car model, some are nearer to 725kg.....thank you, still okay for our little trailer though. So still all good!😊
