Hi all I'm new , I bought a TT this year used it for the first time to Cornwall , towing vehicle is a Kia carens 1.6 petrol , just felt like a bit of a struggle up hills sometimes TT is a Conway Olympia , the reason why I am asking is that I have decided to buy a caravan , I have found out that my car can tow 1300 kg , just worried that the hills may be a problem ..... Thanks
If your car struggles to tow a trailer tent (300kg?) it will struggle a lot more trying to tow 1300kg of big white box.
Generally speaking diesels make better tow cars as they produce a lot of torque at fairly low revs whilst petrol engines produce max torque at high revs. We switched to diesels many years ago as the petrol cars were really hard work, I had to be at least 1 gear lower than when solo to keep the revs up to maintain good progress. Diesels are much more relaxing when towing, diesel autos are even better,
Totally agree with Rob. Diesel, and preferably auto is the way to go. More torque at low revs, and better fuel consumption too.
Back in the 1970s I used to tow with a petrol car, but caravans tended to be lighter then and most diesel cars were awful! Even back then though I used an automatic, as the torque converter was a big help.
best tow car ever;- Citroen BX Diesel 4x4....awesome both on and off road until the suspension collapsed...
Its probably how you have loaded up the van /trailer etc...Put most weight on car and then make sure the heavy stuff in the van is stored at low level...on the floor over the axles is best..
