Hi

Returning to Caravanning after 30 years so trying to get my head around the towing limits. I've been looking through the many posts and can't quite see the answer to my question. So apologies for asking an often queried point.

I have an Audi A3 Sportback 2.0TDI 170BHP 6 Speed Auto

MGVW of 1970kg.
MGTW of 3440kg
Kerb weight of the vehicle is 1455kg

I'd like to tow a Lunar Clubman SI which is 1310 MIRO and 1465 MTPLM.

The owners manual advises a MTW of 1400kg at 12% and 1700kg at 8% gradient.

The engine has plenty of power to pull the van but critical is the weight.

Am I right to think that if I load the car (rather than the trailer) then I can easily ensure that the car is heavier than the trailer and I am therefore legally ok?

My understanding is that:

1 The MTW is advice from the manufacturer on capability to pull on gradients are not part of any legal requirements. The manufacturer may not replace any warranty parts if I have burnt the clutch etc but as the car is out of warranty this is not an issue for me.

2 That the critical legal compliance points are:

   a) not exceeding 100% of the MGVW
   b) not exceeding either the MGTW
   c) not exceeding the MTPLM

Any advice appreciated

Rgds

Andy

The towing ratio guidance is based on the cars kerbweight and caravan mtplm, on the weights you give the caravan is more than than the cars kerbweight, just over 100%.
The other weights must be on the VIN plate. MGTW 3440kg minus MGVW 1970kg = 1,470kg max towing limit.

My car has a kerbweight of 1,495kg caravan mtplm 1,318kg, tow ratio 88%.

A bit heavy for the A3 i think. 1455kg kerbweight so an 85% weight of 1236kg.

Although not a legal number, towing around the 85% figure will ensure your have a safer outfit.

Just because it can tow a house up a hill doesnt mean it will be safe at speed.

Loading the car to balance the weight to me means its not the ideal car.

Thanks sound advice

I've got an Allroad which I was going to sell as it's just starting to be money pit. So we'll have to use it until Tesla put a tow bar on the model 3 (and sell rhd versions)

Maybe but not for a good while yet and i doubt they will cost less than £60 when they do release.

They are not making any low spec models yet and a guess of another 12 months of LHD orders at current production levels.

Not sure if they have made a single RHD car yet?

Spotted a funny article the other day showing a Model 3 with an empty trailer and the guy saying how well it pulled it. Errs its empty... :)

Or the one where the Model X pulled a 100ton wagon of dirt. So its got the pulling power of one strong man :)
It was on rails... Belgium strongman pulled a whole train weighing more.

I love the hype, where are the rear figures :)

Agree, the schedule still says starting to build RHD Q1 2019.

Though the acceleration figures for the strong man weren't that good!!

They will sell high margin first so that will be long range battery, Dual motor and Performance models.

The towing capability will not be an issue though with all the torque from electric motors and the core battery weight.

The challenge will be the range. On the Model X the reports indicate circa 50% range loss through the towing so that might take a long range M3 down to 150 miles.

So maybe we're still waiting for that battery density breakthrough.

We should smack our own bottoms and put ourselves to bed for mentioning the T word

No more T words :)

If you want a towcar all you need is a Mondeo, except where thats unsuitable of course
