We bought the Kia Sorento as a tow car earlier this year, quite an old model 56 plate, it tows well and seems to use towing less fuel than the Kia Carens it replaced which was a year older. The tow bar will take a bike rack as well as the caravan although found need to remove bikes before reversing.

However my wife wanted a new car for general running around, and selected a Jaguar XE a few years old but after the engine change so good mile per gallon and £35 road tax as a result. We had a tow bar fitted, and the 2000 kg tow weight is plenty for our caravan we don't need the 3000 kg the Kia Sorento can pull, however will not be able to take bikes unless wheels removed and carried in caravan.

The Jaguar XE is an automatic or semi automatic not really worked out how to use paddle change yet, the Kia Sorento is geared with low ratio box if required, and the Sorento is automatic change between 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive in high ratio, I think the Jaguar is always 4 wheel drive, but no low ratio, and the automatic gear box has a snow option which I assume gives low torque likely an advantage on non hard standing sites. As yet not towed with the Jag.

I will guess the great MPG of the Jag will go when towing? So not really intending to tow with it, until the Sorento is got rid of, the boot of the Jag is not as easy to access as the Sorento's the latter has rear folding seats so ideal for carrying all the luggage we want when on holiday.

So it is likely to be some time before Jag is used to tow with, so question is what are they like as a tow car? Not keen on idea of lying on the ground to pull electrics socket down, or fitting the removable tow ball, but being able to see the ball with the reversing camera must be a plus.

But as to what it is like to tow with, as yet not a clue, as to which automatic mode to use, or if should use semi-automatic mode, well I am all ears. Towed with automatics before, however they had no options in the same way, seem to remember the old Rover 3500 normally only used 2nd and 3rd gear, to get smooth take off, and there was an option to get it to use 1st gear when towing or wanting performance. Other cars you could force it down a gear for engine braking, remember Mini had free wheel in first gear so one only selected second gear for steep down hill when using as a semi automatic. Although only towed a boat with Mini, home made tow bracket with ball at front as well for launching boat, would no be allowed today.

So what tips for towing with Jag XE please. As likely first time used will be emergency when Sorento fails, so what will I need, and what gear option should be used?

Sounds like it's similar to the Tiptronic box in the Mondeos. They had an automatic 5 speed. The gear lever had the usual park, neutral, drive, reverse positions but could also be moved to the right to put it in manual mode.

Then pushing the stick forward or back would change up or down with the car staying in whatever gear was selected. There were a couple of switches on the steering wheel which could also be used to change gear.

Auto mode was really essential for towing a caravan up hills. Not too bad on the flat though in auto. The problem was the car tended to change gear at fixed engine speeds rather than the power needed. It's as if it didn't know it was towing a caravan.

Bulletproof gear box though and nice to use. Heavy on fuel running round but good on motorway.

Work out how to use the paddle change on the Jaguar.

It will be tiptronic, so you use paddles to change up and down the gearbox, as you would a manual.

The system is invaluable as you can drop down the box to benefit from engine braking on downhill stretches, a must when towing to remain in control and reduce the chances of brake fade.

On older automatics it was known as "lock up", but very few drivers ever learned what it was or how to use it properly.

The Jag automatic is a ZF 8-speed proper auto with torque converter.

In D mode, the paddles can be used to "suggest" a change up or down which will persist for a short while, then the auto will take over again. Useful for one-off engine braking changes. You can force it back to auto mode by holding the + paddle for a couple of seconds.

In S mode, the car will be in a slightly sportier full-auto mode until you use a paddle. It will then stay in "manual" mode until you switch to D or hold the + paddle in for a couple of seconds.

The car will be fine towing in D mode and you won't need to use the paddles at all. It has so many more ratios than the autos of old, and so much more powerful control systems that you won't have any restrictions. Hook up the van and tow.

(Source: have had two Discovery 4s and an XF with the same 'box).

Thank you so no need to learn how to use gear box, I just can't get into this just drive thing, I am of the age where we did everything manually, whole idea of it all being done for me is refreshing.

You have to learn to stop pushing your left foot through the floor every time you stop. No matter how hard you push there is no clutch pedal there.

Yes I have to remember left foot does nothing, but the bigger problem is wiping the window rather than using indicators, with the Jag the stalks are on wrong side, right hand and arm traditionally used through window to give hand signals, so should also be hand used to work electric signals, which it is with Sorento however for some unknown reason with Jag swapped around.

Not quite: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Turn_indicator_stalk

Every Ford, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mercedes and Vauxhall I've ever driven has a LH indicator stalk.

I seem to find that whatever my current vehicle is the next one will be the other way round.
Range Rover on left
Hyundai Tucson on right
Current Lexus RX450 on left
...al least my left foot still has something to do on the Lexus.. it has a foot operated parking brake on the left near the footrest
