We bought the Kia Sorento as a tow car earlier this year, quite an old model 56 plate, it tows well and seems to use towing less fuel than the Kia Carens it replaced which was a year older. The tow bar will take a bike rack as well as the caravan although found need to remove bikes before reversing.
However my wife wanted a new car for general running around, and selected a Jaguar XE a few years old but after the engine change so good mile per gallon and £35 road tax as a result. We had a tow bar fitted, and the 2000 kg tow weight is plenty for our caravan we don't need the 3000 kg the Kia Sorento can pull, however will not be able to take bikes unless wheels removed and carried in caravan.
The Jaguar XE is an automatic or semi automatic not really worked out how to use paddle change yet, the Kia Sorento is geared with low ratio box if required, and the Sorento is automatic change between 2 wheel drive and 4 wheel drive in high ratio, I think the Jaguar is always 4 wheel drive, but no low ratio, and the automatic gear box has a snow option which I assume gives low torque likely an advantage on non hard standing sites. As yet not towed with the Jag.
I will guess the great MPG of the Jag will go when towing? So not really intending to tow with it, until the Sorento is got rid of, the boot of the Jag is not as easy to access as the Sorento's the latter has rear folding seats so ideal for carrying all the luggage we want when on holiday.
So it is likely to be some time before Jag is used to tow with, so question is what are they like as a tow car? Not keen on idea of lying on the ground to pull electrics socket down, or fitting the removable tow ball, but being able to see the ball with the reversing camera must be a plus.
But as to what it is like to tow with, as yet not a clue, as to which automatic mode to use, or if should use semi-automatic mode, well I am all ears. Towed with automatics before, however they had no options in the same way, seem to remember the old Rover 3500 normally only used 2nd and 3rd gear, to get smooth take off, and there was an option to get it to use 1st gear when towing or wanting performance. Other cars you could force it down a gear for engine braking, remember Mini had free wheel in first gear so one only selected second gear for steep down hill when using as a semi automatic. Although only towed a boat with Mini, home made tow bracket with ball at front as well for launching boat, would no be allowed today.
So what tips for towing with Jag XE please. As likely first time used will be emergency when Sorento fails, so what will I need, and what gear option should be used?
