Me and my wife are wanting to buy our first caravan and it will be the first time towing a caravan . I've just done my test to tow . We have a 2015 nissan x trail 1.6 dci 7 seats 4x4 . We don't know if you get a twin or single axle caravan it needs to be a 5 berth for the family . Can anybody help me or advise me which would be better to tow with my car . Thanks

Axle not alex! I don't think a 1.6 would be big enough for any kind of 5 berth caravan, but there are plenty of more clued up folk who will be able to advise you.

Www.whattowcar.com is a good place to start for a free report and advice on exactly what your cars towing capabilities may be when matched with various makes and models of Caravan.

They give a star rating on the match, as well as reports from others who own a similar combination.

Good Luck with your search, tbh though, l think that you wkuld really struggle to find a twin Axle caravan that was light enough to safely match your cars towing capabilities.

Some older compact single axle lightweight basic caravans may have a 5 berth layout, and be within your towing capacity for your towcar.

your car has a kerb weight of 1500kgs, to have a safe tow you need to be around 85% of that so your looking at a caravan of around 1275kgs fully loaded, so that rules out any twin axle caravans as most are well above that even empty!

Just to clarify when you say passed the test to tow. Do you now have a B+E driving licence? The X Trail 1.6l is not powerful enough for the majority of 5 berth caravans if there are any under 1300kg.
For a twin which would probably be better for a family of 5 you probably would need a vehicle with a 3.0L engine. We tow our twin axle 2000kg MTPLM with a Jeep Grand Cherokee. We have also towed with a Shogun however the Shogun is very heavy on fuel!

Thanks everyone for your reply. I've just had a look at my v5 and the kerb weight is 1793kg (if G mass in service is the kerb weight ) and my max tow able mass on my v5 is 2000kg. So 85% of the kerb weight I should be able to tow a caravan at 1524kg is this right . Plus with it only being a 1.6 dci it's got 130bhp and 236ib ft . My dad's car is a landrover discovery 2 2.5 diesel and my car is more powerful so if he tows a caravan with no problems shouldn't my car be fine with putting . Thanks . Any body with a 1.6dci x trail who tows a caravan could you give me any advice please

I still think you could face a few problems with a fairly heavy car, Seven seats laden, and only a 130bhp Engine.

A Lot of manufactureres calculations are done under test conditions, often not fully laden, and no way indicate the reality of Towing a heavy Caravan up Steep gradients, doing Hill starts at Traffic lights with the smell of burning Clutch or worse still loose gravel on the road from wear and tear of the surface.

You cannot honestly compair the Landrover Discovery to your Xtrail, two completely different set ups and features entirely, take a look and try compairing them with the same caravan hitched up on the Whattowcar.com website and the Disco will win hands down.

Stability and long motorway gradients, headwinds, and Crosswinds are also factors to consider. The 2.2 Xtrail would have been a better option, but l fully understand your situation, hence the my previous advice to keep the Caravan weight as light as possible.

The other factor is that often on comparitive models of the same veichle, the 7 seater version will have a much lower towing capacity than its 5 seater twin brother, that was certainly the case for my Daughters 7 seat Zafira, hence she traded it in and bought a new Toyota 2.0 so that she could tow my caravan if ever she wanted to borrow it, the Zafira 7 seat had a very low towing capacity indeed.

Good Luck with your search, but please do not let your heart rule you head with the exitement of owning your first Caravan, safety must come first, take your time, and dont just buy the first caravan you like the look of, simply because the figures appeared to match up on paper.

The reality of owning it, as part of your outfit can be
very different indeed once you are out on the open road, and a costly mistake to put right, l admit fully to making that mistake in the past myself, it certainly takes the pleasure out of the Hobby to say the least.

no g mass in services is the gross weight of the car, i.e its actual weight sorry but your figures aren't right at all.

its not more powerful than your dads car at all, besides its got nothing to do with how much power a car has, well not quiet that but its down to being able to stop the caravan and as his discovery will weigh in at 2.5 ton and yours doesn't

your car cant tow anything heavier than 1275 kgs simple as that

Sorry but I'm not liking what I'm reading lol. I thought I would be ok . I've been on the whattowcar.com site from what romany girl as said (photos attached) so am I best not to go over the 1275kg marg6 and don't read what the website says (photo attached) I've seen some 4 berth caravans at under 1300kg fully loaded . So I might have to think about a awning with a iner sleeping area and think I might look at a re ma for my car to get more power to tow . Thanks everyone

The Nissan X-Trail dCi 130 [4WD] and the Caravan as an example with a laden weight of 1460 kg is a fairly good match.
This is what whattowcar.com is saying for my car

Elddis Xplore 574 weighs in at just over 1100kg, sleeps four and five at a squeeze. I had one and did it, there are lightweight caravans out there...... But you are towing with a not very strong towcar so take care
