Hi aLL
Just purchased a 1998 Elddis Typhoon XLI.
Previous owner told me that he put between 32 and 38 psi in the tyres depending on load but my research online says 52 psi. Any advice on what pressure is correct please. Caravan is just under a tonne unladen. Tyres on it at the moment are also mud and snow so quite a heavy tread if that makes any difference.
Thanks

Dan

52psi sounds about right for a single axle caravan.

Mine is 54psi for a single axle similar to your caravan, so 52 sounds good

It all depends on the size of the tyre as the more volume there is the less pressure you need.
It works on pounds per square inch which means there are less square inches in a narrower tyre than a wider one so requires more pressure.
Our first caravan was about the same weight as yours with 13 inch rims and the tyre pressures were 42 psi. pressure. The caravan we have now is about 100 kgs. heavier but has wider tyres (195 x 14) with a greater volume and because of the greater volume only require 39 psi.
Both caravans mentoned above are single axle which the above tyre pressures being quoted from the corresponding Coachman handbook that came with each van.

Tyresafe has a calculator for caravans. They are a not for profit safety organisation, and the calculations are based on the factors that Tango55 refers to.

For ours, it came out with a lower figure than the handbook, I think as it’s a lightweight. It certainly seems to tow with less bounce at this; and I feel reassured by getting an independent authority opinion..

Many thanks for all your replies.

52 is sounding right for mine.
Not sure why the previous owner thought 32 would be ok.
Must have gone through a few tyres and a few snakes in his time at that pressure!!

Info on the tyre is 175 R13 C 97/95 Q
.

Put that in to Tyresafe.org and it recommends 64psi

Hmmm.

64 psi. is more likely what you would put in a small trailer tyre due to the small volume like I said in my previous post regarding pounds per square inch. However, the size tyre 175 R13 94 is identical to my previous caravan which had steel rimmed wheels and the pressure in the Coachman handbook is 50 psi. so 52 psi. as stated in your initial post sounds more realistic.

I will try it at 52 and see how it feels on the road I think.

Just out of interest I have a Citroen Relay for work and that is recommended 65psi in the front and rear with a GVW of just over 3 tonne

If the previous owner was working at 32-38 psi and there is specific evidence that 52 psi is the correct value, make sure that your ares are rated for these higher pressures. Also that the tyres have a load rating to meet your MTPLM.
The loading rate for the sum of both tyres must exceed your MTPLM.
