We currently have a 2010 diesel auto AWD Kuga and as a tow car, it has been excellent. But we have had problems with it getting choked up because my normal daily driving is a few short miles to work & back. Yes we can take it for a blast up the motorway periodically, but perhaps it’s time to move to petrol. Has anyone got experience of a petrol Kuga AWD as a tow car? I’ve done a search, but it seems everyone has diesel.
Had petrol and diesel versions of Mondeo's. Both 2L engines.
No comparison, the diesel tows far better, 26MPG for the petrol when towing and 34MPG for the diesel (Midlands to Cornwall). Had 39MPG towing to the cumbrian coast.
Even though my journeys are not DPF friendly the diesel just wins hands down for everything else.
Better fuel consumption in my 2L larger family car than my sisters 1300cc Fiesta. And cheaper tax also.
I pay the same amount of tax as a Ford KA with a 1.2 petrol engine.
Dutchman parked next to me with quite large caravan had new petrol Kuga. Most Dutch drive petrol due to very high road tax on diesel cars in Holland. His was turbo petrol 1.5litre I think & he said it towed ok. Turbo petrol of suitable size & power should be just as good as equivalent diesel for towing.
Worth pointing out though if buying new diesel that dpf probs on short runs appear to be largely solved now. Most current diesels require filling with Adblue additive but adds to complication of course & if your annual mileage is low then turbo petrol might be better choice.
Look at torque figures for both turbo petrol & diesel versions may well be similar.
Before buying my Kuga I did look at both the petrol and diesel versions, After much deliberation I chose the 150 HP diesel Kuga and am very pleased with my decision, After looking at what else was available the (Citroen Peugot) diesel engines fitted to Fords are a very hard act to follow. I honestly dont believe there is anything else to compare them with. And another plus they dont need add blue.

He said it towed OK, thats a personal thing though. Did he compare his car with a diesel version?
240Nm for the petrol Kuga with max torque at 3888 RPM, 400Nm for the diesel Kuga at just 2075rpm.
My Petrol Mondeo towed fine and i would have no issues towing my caravan with one again. But being handed the keys to a petrol model or a diesel model for the journey and i would take the diesel everytime.
I do lots of short journeys, but it doesnt take the car long to do a short regen which keeps the DPF happy.

My ASX 4wd auto is 150hp and doesn't need Adblue. All Mitsubishis have 5 years warranty, and are rated as the 4th most reliable car manufacturer.
The reviews for Mitsubishi are always dreadful. Some I have looked at are dreadfully flawed. I've learned to ignore them!
The engine in my ASX, and the Outlander is not a PSA engine, its Mitsubishi's own 4N14 made in either Japan or China, and mated to a torque converter auto box with paddle shift as standard.
My son works at a Ford dealership and has just bought a 2019 diesel Auto Kuga for himself. When I spoke to him he says no problem the DPF fear is overrated.
Just today took delivery of a brand spanking new Ford Kuga 1.5lt Petrol 3 Pot Petrol, firms car.
Well impressed with the spec, and as we get the vehicle replaced every 3 months (7,500 miles) I won’t be having a tow bar fitted.
All kit will now have to go into the car and roofbox, Son just got me the Thule Roof Bars at trade cost £80, so happy with that, will be returning the £30 Aldi roof bars, that I just bought.
OK the fuel is going to cost more than when using 17 plate Diesel Golf and Trailer.
For us company car drivers, it’s looking like diesel is out the window, and petrol is the way forward until we end up driving all electric cars.
