Good afternoon, i can't seem to find info i need to check if my car is suitable to tow my Caravan. Ive checked online but its over my head.. could some please take the time to post the figures for me TIA - Car VW passat 2012 - 2.0 L tdi Estate 1386 bhp. My Caravan Swift Challenger 530- 2006. Thanks again

Check the handbook and the V5 for the towing weights and kerbweight. The max nose weight will also be in the handbook but check the tow bar as well as it may have a lower max noseweight.

The MTPLM of the caravan will be in the caravan handbook and on the weight plate by the door.

You need to check your own vehicles for the exact weights, we can only guess at them and we don't want to give you the wrong or misleading information.

You may have a gross train weight over 3500kg with this outfit, do you have a B+E licence?

Your cars kerbweight and max tow will be in your logbook (V5C)

The axle weights and gross weight will be on the chassis plate usually on your door frame.

Caravans MIRO or unladen weight and the Grodd laden weights will be near the door on teh caravan.


1386 bhp... WOW.. Rocket powered?   


Online weights put the caravan between fairly heavy compared to your kerbweight to too 102%.


93% if its the lighter Truma Heating, or upto 102% if its the Alde heating system.

Weights vary too much to speculate, you need to check the plate on the caravan. Alwyas possible a previous owner had the weights upgraded also.


Seems like a lot of caravan for that car though. Power wise it will pull it buy the caravans close to the kerbweight of the car.

I think the kerbweight will be just under 1,500kg, I have a Skoda Octavia Estate 4x4 same engine, very good torque, a little smaller than the Passat and my Kerbweight is 1,495kg, Check your handbook or your V5C for mass in service and work on that.
With mine the weight in the handbook is the same as the V5C mass in service which includes 75kg for driver.
Car 1,495kg, caravan mtplm 1,318kg = 88% tow ratio.

There should be a plate at the bottom of the driver's side B post with the relevant weights on it.

To obtain your cars correct kerb weight you're best taking it to a weigh bridge, manufacturers published kerb weights are way below what the true weight is, for instance my Mondeo has a published kerb weight of 1572kg,but having weighed it on a weigh bridge its actual kerb weight is 1700kg
