Caravan is a ABI jubilee supreme envoy, was a 5berth apparently but doesn't have the bunk any more, I can't find a wieght for the caravan anywhere!!!! But have been told by the person I brought it from he thinks it wieghs 1100kg max load

Hi,

The 3.5 ton limit is the maximum weight of the car (GVW) and the maximum weight of the caravan (MLTP).

If you car has a kerb weight of 2360kg then likely the GVW will be ~ 2.9 Ton leaving you only 600kg for a caravan.

The figure should be listed on the weight plate for the car, usually under the bonnet or on the B pillar.

If you passed your driving test from January 1997 the combined maximum mass of the car and caravan must not exceed 3500 kg.
The maximum weight allowance of your BMW and caravan will almost certainly exceed this figure.

The maximum weight of your car can be found on the VIN plate, often found on a front door pilllar. The maximum weight of your caravan is also plated, normally on a plate next to the caravan door.

My son tows a lighter caravan than yours with a diesel X5. He has had to take another test to tow legally, which with training and use of vehicle cost around £500.

Hey decto thanks for the speedy reply!!
Hmm that's interesting I have four weights on the chassis plate one was 5600kg haha!! So took it as the to axle weights added together are the kerb wieght which was the 2360kg
But I'm worried about the van as I can not for the life of me find the wieght plate on it anywhere 😬, but online says the caravan wieght 906kgs with a maximum permissable load of 1100kg

Cheers

Humber Wolf thank you to!!😀

Ahh yeah my understanding was that the train wieght must not exceed 3500kg
Correct me if I'm wrong here!! so if my car has a kerb weight of 2360kg take this from my 3500kg allowance this leaves me with 1140kg for a caravan?? 😊
Cheers

No. It is the maximum permitted weights, not the kerb weight that is important for licence purposes.

Your VIN plate has four weights. The first weight is normally the maximum weight permitted, the second weight is the maximum combined car and trailer.

Hi,

See section 7.1 for an example of what should be on the plate.

It is the gross maximum weight of the car and not the kerbweight that counts. As said more than likely the maximum you could tow would be about 600-700kg with a B licence.

Hi Grant90. The advice you've been given is correct I'm afraid. In order to tow any 'braked trailer' (which includes all caravans) the maximum permissible weights (note: NOT the actual weights) of the car and caravan combined must not exceed 3500kg. The only way round this is to take another test to gain a 'Category B+E' extension.

It's ridiculous in my view that you could legally tow your caravan with most versions of a Ford Focus but not with your BMW X5, but that's the way the law is written unfortunately.

Recently had a conversation with a lady who had to take the additional test as she has a horse trailer and she said it was a lot more difficult than she imagined it would be so worth doing a bit of swotting.
Good luck!
