Due to a change of circumstances we now find ourselves in a one car household...the car car in question is a Dacia Logan 0.9tce.
We’ve owned for a while now and has proven to be a great car with the 900cc turbo engine providing plenty of power and quite capable of keeping up with the bigger boys whilst retaining great fuel economy as well up to 46mpg around town and 54mpg on a run.
Any I digress, does anyone have any real world experience of towing a 650kg to 850kg van with this car, on paper it’s a match, obviously being a petrol it’s not got the low down torque the 1.5dci has but bhp is the same at 90hp as is the kerbweight.
According to what I've just read the max tow weight is 810kg with a kerbweight of 980kg. As you haven't given a year or model for your car my figures may well be wrong so you need to check with your handbook, V5 and weight plate to get the correct details for your car.
I suspect that towing a caravan of suitable weight is possible but it may be hard work and not particularly enjoyable. Have you considered a trailer tent or folding camper that would not have so much of a problem with wind resistance and be much easier to tow?
Thanks for replying, the car is a 2015 0.9tce Laurette stop/start. I have looked at the logbook and it gives a kerb weight of 1035kg, so that's why I'm interested in 650-850kg vans.
We've done the trailer tent/folding camper thing in the past and my wife never really enjoyed it, also had Campervan and although liked that found it a pain everytime you wanted to have a day out somewhere.
We have considered getting another car just for towing but can't really justify having a car and and a caravan sat around but it might be the route we have to take.
You need to check the max tow weight as I mentioned earlier as it may be less than the 85% of kerbweight figure. The max tow weight must not be exceeded.
There isn't going to be much choice of caravans with an MTPLM of 850kg, apart from fairly oldish models the only caravan I can think of is a Freedom which usually has a very low payload allowance, that's why I suggested a folding camper.
If you do find something and decide to tow you will need to look after the turbo. It is likely to be on boost for longer periods when towing so ensure you leave the engine to idle when stopping after a long run. It keeps oil circulating around the turbo while it runs down from very high speeds.
We had the same engine in a smart and the turbo died after 15,000 miles. We were not an isolated case.
I'd also consider more regular oil changes to keep the turbo healthy.
Good advice regards the turbo for those that don’t know....thanks anyway. I have been using a 1998 V70 T5 as my towcar for a few years but I’m currently part restoring/rebuilding the auto box and engine.
I’ve had the Logan from new and now covered nearly 90k in it and apart from regular basic servicing absolutely nothing has gone wrong with it.
I tow a Trigano Rubis pop up with MTPLM of 750kg. The tow car is a Skoda Fabia 1.2 turbo petrol with an auto gearbox. I have never had problems with hills or keeping up with traffic. The DSG gearbox makes all the difference to the driving experience with the hill start facility and seamless gearchanges.
