Hi all I have just recently purchased an Elddis Typhoon GT 1998 caravan and it has two 7 pin sockets (black & grey) I also have a trailer with a 7 pin socket which I hook up as normal to my 7 pin towbar..... Now!!! I'm in a bit of a pickle 😣 would it be better to leave the whole system alone as it is and charge the leisure battery at home or would it be better to convert the whole lot to 13 pin? Is there a 7 pin (black) to 7 pin (grey & black) adapter? I'm mega confused, any help would be greatly appreciated.

Here are the available adapters, but not what you're after I'm afraid.

Do you need to use the grey plug at all. It only runs the fridge and charges the leisure battery while towing.

If you can cool the fridge at home the night before it will stay cool for 4 hours or more. Just plug it in at home or run it on gas overnight.

The battery charging doesn't do a lot on a short journey. Again if you can plug it in at home or use EHU on site that will do it.

It will keep things simple and cost nothing.

First of all, and to save further confusion, you will have plugs on the ends of the caravan leads and sockets on the car.   The black one is generally referred to as the 12N (12 volts, Normal) and the grey one as 12S (12 volts, Supplementary)

It would indeed be best to convert the lot to 13-pin but probably not worth it in your case FTTB. I did mine DiY cheaply (but not in an inferior way), but a professional job can cost big £££.

There would be absolutely no point in a 7-pin socket (black) to a pair of 7-pin sockets (grey & black) converter, if you mean branching the existing 7-pin car socket (12N) out into a pair of 7-pin sockets (12N and 12S) for the two caravan leads to plug into. There is no circuit in your existing 12N car socket that can provide what is needed for a 12S socket.

This explanation is useful. Look at pages 4 and 5 :-

Personally I would just leave things as they are. They work perfectly well I presume? We are in exactly the same position, with a trailer as well as a caravan. Our car is fitted with just a 7 pin 12N socket which does for both the caravan and the trailer. The caravan has a 12S plug, but we simply don't use it. We cool our fridge and charge our battery before we go, and they are both ready to use when we get on site. Then we plug into EHU.

Best Regards,
Colin
