Hi , I tow with an i40 1.7 diesel the 136 bhp version . We have a Sprite Major 4 FB which has an MTPLM of 1342 kg. It pulls it no problem and on a recent trip to the Dordogne averaged nearly 35 mpg over the journey. The only niggle I have is that they are quite low but apart from that cant fault it , we have had it 3 years now and it has been faultless.

Thanks for replying. Do you have any issues with light steering or having little grunt when pulling away ?
Your caravan is similar weight to mine so sounds promising. I like the look of the I40s and can pick up a real bargain.
I find it pulls well , there are just the two of us usually so dont carry a lot of gear. I would definitely go for the 136bhp because most are 116bhp which wouldn't have the power. We are in a position were we could change the car now but I am more than happy with it
Yes I'll look at the 136bhp model. It's a shame thats the most powerful engine they do. Just heard some rumours about lack of power and light steering when towing but as you said you have no concerns. If you had no problems with it towing round France hopefully it will be just fine for our shortish caravan journeys.
Hi , in my experience it's certainly not underpowered , we recently looked at a Tuscon but the towing weights are rubbish and it was nothing like the i40 power wise to drive. Our i40 is a 78% match with the Sprite , so you will be somewhere similar cheers Paul
I don't have any experience with that specific car but in principle the 136bhp diesel engine should be absolutely fine to tow that weight. We've used Passat estates with 140/150bhp but which I believe are slightly heavier to tow a 1300kg caravan to France and Switzerland with no performance issues at all. I can't think of any reason why the steering should be light when towing unless whoever told you that had loaded their trailer so heavily/badly that it was putting far too much weight on the tow bar.
