The HR-V is basically a Civic on larger wheels, l have owned a Civic in the past, which towed a lightweight Lunar Zenith, and now own CRV D-tech 2.2. Both had excellent build quality and reliability, but the Civic disliked Hill starts when towing, and long motorway inclines.
The HR-V is based on the Jazz platform not the Civic, although it does share the 1.6 diesel engine. You do not state which engine was in your Civic, but both the Practical Caravan test (Sep. 2015) and the Towcar Awards, where it was 2016 class champion, praised its towing ability and in particular its stability.
The 1.6 diesel may not have the grunt of the 2.2 found in earlier Civics (I towed with one for three years) but I would have thought it was more than adequate with a light caravan, based on these reviews.
