Does anyone tow with the above mentioned car? the van is a bailey ranger 500/4 so not really heavy. Ive read the v50 can be abit twitchy with it only being a light weight car.
It may be a V50 petrol but you haven't stated what size engine are you referring to?
However, I would certainly say that it's not a good match anyway because the Volvo V50 2.4 diesel which I tow with is about the the only one in it's class that would be capable of towing a Bailey 4 berth caravan and even that would probably be over a 100% match. In comparison, My 2 berth Coachman with an MTPLM of just over 1300 kgs. only just about makes a good match with a vehicle kerbweight of 1550 kgs. which is the heaviest in the V50 range so the petrol version will not only be too light but also lack the torque needed for towing a heavy caravan.
Sorry i was abit vague with my question. The car i was thinking about was the 1.8 but on checking the towing weight its max braked is 1200kg so thats out of the window so im now looking at either the 2ltr diesel or maybe the 2.4 petrol which both have max towing weight of 1500kg braked. The van fully loaded comes in at just shirt of 1300kg so either one of the cars should be ok
In that case, personally I would tend to go for the 2litre diesel, unless you normally do a lot of short distance commuting, which diesels with a DPF don't really like. Diesels do however have better torque characteristics for towing, and better fuel consumption.
The maximum towing weight of any vehicle is only a guide as to what the towbar can actually pull before any of the components fail or distort and snap. Each vehicle is tested by the manufacturer in order to apply a figure in their brochure etc. so doesn't qualify as being a safe match at all. You need to go by the kerbweight of the towing vehicle each and every time and ignore the figures applied for the towing capability.
However, the 2 ltr. diesel with 136 BHP would be a better option but you still need to check the kerbweight first and calculate the weight of the caravan's MTPLM.
