I recently posted about a volvo v50 and if anyone used one to tow with, since then ive found out they are focus with a volvo body so i opted for the bmw 520d as it has more towing weight and more room, i went looking at vans yesterday and found a really nice bailey pageant moselle which the car will tow with ease but need to fit a tow bar, are they diy fit or is it a case of taking it to a towbar place to get it fitted and wired.

The towbar will be a simple bolt on job and if you opt for the dedicated wiring simply plug it in.. But then you may need a trip to a dealer to program the cars systems for the towbar.

Disables the reversing and fog lights on the car and may affect any stability control.

It really depends on the age of the BMW, yes some 5 series are straight forward to do, however the wiring is not as easy as plug and play on most of them. Most BMW have certain features already pre-programmed, for example the C2 function will work and the fog will turn off, but most BMW's have a button for the parking sensors which can only be bypassed if you find a dealer with a technician that knows what to do. Generally they won't know what to do, this is also the same for Radar cruise, lane assist etc.
(This is generally the same for most F series and G series BMW's)

We would always recommend you fit Vehicle specific wiring on any late E series onwards.

Fitting VS wiring can be plug and play if you own certain vehicles like Land Rovers as they provide 2 plugs on the crash beam, but most manufacturers don't unless the vehicle has trailer prep.
