Hi,

We're looking to get one of these cars pretty soon. Does anybody have one and can offer any review on its towing capabilities?
We currently have a 61 plate 2.2 diesel Mitsubishi Outlander and it tows our 2016 swift challenger 590 (ALDE) really well.
The Mazda is only two wheel drive and I'm wondering how it performs.

Thank you in advance.

Mike

I looked at the CX5 models 2 years ago and from what I can remember they are fairly light. I tow a Sprite Major with a 1500kg MTPLM and decided that it was too heavy, your Challenger must be heavier than our Sprite and I expect that the caravan is heavier than the car.

Hi Rob,

Appreciate the swift reply, no pun intended.

You might be able to help me in terms of weights etc, the mazda brochure states that the towing limit is 1800kg with maximum kerb weight being 1595kg. Our van is sited permanently and I only need to tow if theres a warranty issue, or if we change sites, possibly next march.
Our van with the ALDE system states that the MTPLM weight is 1586kg. I'm reckoning that this is to the limit but with the maximum being 1800 it still should be ok to tow if it's only once a year?

Thanks again for the reply, any info you can offer will be very valuable.

Cheers,

Mike

Hi, I thought the kerbweight of the petrol version was about 1500 but I haven't looked at the figures for over 2 years and specs and weights have probably changed since I last looked.

Your weights give almost a 100% match so it is possible but I wouldn't be happy towing long distances with that sort of weight especially with a petrol engine. If it is only going to be one trip a year to a nearby site then it might be ok, it would be legal (assuming you have B+E on your licence) but it might not be the best tow vehicle for that weight of caravan.

Hi Rob,

Yeah, it seems the latest model is a bit heavier, but as you say it's near enough the limit.
I'm trying to stay away from diesel, as my wife will be using it as her daily car too and from work which is less than ten miles away. It seemed to be one if the best cars for the price that suits us as a family.

Really appreciate the reply and advice though.

Out of interest, what do you use to tow?

Thanks again,

Mike

I use a SsangYong Korando 2.2 diesel auto which is a great car but not what you want for the daily commute. The new Korando has just been launched with a 1.5 petrol with a 1500kg tow limit, there are some good deals on the older model at the moment but I'm not sure if there are any petrol models available. CAMC members get a free towbar with SsangYong cars which will save you the best part of £700.

Will the Mazda dealer let you have the demo car for a weekend so you can tow with it?

Rob

Just looked at the offers, a new, old model, Korando is available from £18000 but it's a 2.2 diesel.
