OK not for those with caravans all though there may be some, but this new BEV SUV, could tick most of the box’s if not all of them for campers who tow trailers, especially the 750kg none braked type like I do.

Not only that the open style Roof Rails will handle upto 75kg which is not to shabby either.

Battery capacity is not huge at just 44.5kwh, but will give 163 miles range, and can be fast charged using CCS connector in 40 minutes from 10% to 80%.

It’s the price that makes this latest BEV interesting, £24k is around the same price as the new Renault Zoe which is a tiny car in comparison with no towing capability.

Of course you are not in the same league as the Tesla Model 3 or the new VW ID.3, but that is to be expected when the MG ZS EV is around half the price.

It's certainly a step in the right direction, but I don't think it's a big enough one yet.

If you were to load the car up with a 750kg trailer and a 75kg roof box that 163-mile battery range would invariably plummet. If, for instance you lived in the Midlands and wanted to go on holiday to Edinburgh, you'd need to stop and charge the battery at least twice just to make a single journey. Consider that £24k will also buy you a diesel-powered Golf estate which is capable of making the journey there and back on one tank, and there you have the rub.

Yep I get that SamandRose, but you have to look at the price of the MG, for many folk it will tick all the box’s.

But I agree the battery is to small, any new BEV imho should have a 100kwh battery as a minimum, as that would give at least 350 miles range, summer and winter.

The problem with the MG is that it is a fossil car adapted to BEV, the makers SAIC of China should have designed something from the ground up to be a BEV, but that would have pumped up the cost.

Even the Tesla Model 3 is just a 74kwh battery for the LR, and being a smallish car not an SUV is good for 300+ miles range.

I would not touch the MG with a barge pole, but at 3 years old coming of lease, they will be a cheap used buy for around £10k and could become the go to used BEV purchase for many.

A similar sized SUV BEV to the MG will be the Tesla Model Y which comes out in the next year or so, but that will be double the price of the MG.

I think that is an introductory offer for the first 10,000 orders, although looking on YouTube, a number of folk have already cancelled and got there £500 deposit back.

Apparently there have been some rust issues with the fossil models and the 7 year anti perforation warranty seems slightly less than comprehensive.

But again, what do you expect with such a cheap vehicle, there has to be a compromise, but rapid depreciation will benefit used buyers to a certain extent.

It’s current nearest rival is the Kia Kona BEV, at £10,000 or even more above the cost of the MG, although in fairness to the Kona it does have much better range, I guess you would just have to spend more time charging with MG, but if you don’t do high mileage and are not in a rush, that will be fine with many folk.

I wouldn’t buy one, even the MG website is poor with font overlapping pictures so you can’t read it properly, I’ve heard the build quality isn’t great which is hardly surprising, remember Rover , dreadful cars, too closer relation to the now MG brand for me.
I went to an EV event in my Moms village the other day and even though other cars are a bit more pricey they are far better built.

Well I got that number wrong on the MG discount, it originally applied to the first 1000 sold, but that soon got eaten up with them doing 1078 sales in June alone, and they have since gone on to sell over 2000 units, so the MG discount has now to apply to the first 3000 sales, according to Autocar.co.uk who feature an interesting article on the MG ZS EV.

To be fair SAIC who are the Chinese manufacturer have sold 135,000 of the cars over in China, of course China is a massive market, but such a high number would make you think that any problems with production would have been long ironed out by now.

Maybe those U.K. problems with corrosion, one car was just 6 months old, are isolated cases as can happen with any car brand.

MG have at least got one thing right in that they are not offering various battery capacities, it come in just the 44kw, although as mentioned before they should have gone with at least double that, but I guess that they are just aiming to keep the price as low as possible, also offering only two trim/feature models is another good move as it keeps production more simple.

One of the reasons for the limited battery pack, I guess is due to the fact that the MG ZS EV is a bastardised fossil car, and that a larger battery pack could not be accommodated.

In fact even the 44Kw battery is slung worryingly low below the car, although will make the car very stable with such a low centre of gravity, not to sure what happens when the car meets a sleeping policeman !

Just had an update, seems that the MG discount on the MG ZS EV, is to run until the end of the year with no cap on numbers sold.

That makes the top spec model £23k and the entry level model £21k.

Which probably makes the MG the best value for money BEV available in the U.K.

Obviously MG are looking to gain some kind of market share and brand awareness with the MG ZS EV, as they enter the European BEV market, and with these prices they will.

Imagine what the price of one of these will be when it comes of a 3 year lease etc, in 2022 you will be able to bag one for less than £10k, what’s not to like.

Good on MG, or SAIC the Chinese company that owns the MG brand, there competitors will no doubt have there heads in there hands.

Another update, it appears that the MG ZS EV is not Type approved for towing, just had that confirmed via email from MG UK.

At least it put’s that rumour to bed.

To be fair, with a 44kwh battery, range would have been seriously reduced if towing, the car does need a larger battery, maybe MG will get around to fitting a 100kwh battery, maybe then towing will be a possibility.

That's a bit harsh Bessie, but I will take your word for it as I have never been in a modern day MG.

Apart from not being able to tow with the MG ZS EV it does appear an OK budget BEV, of course there has to be a compromise when paying just £21k when the closest competitor is wrong £29k.

For a lot of folk the small 44kwh battery will not be an issue, even if the range is just 163 miles, as fast charging from 10% up to 80% takes under 40 minutes.

The MG ZS EV, is selling like hot cakes, that there is no doubt.

Although our fleet manager was less than impressed when I mentioned the MG, incidentally the finance director at the firm I works drives a Tesla Model S, so at least there is a benchmark at the firm when it comes to BEV's.

Down at my level, we are just greatfull for what we get, the petrol BMW 1 series was a nightmare on many levels, the Ford Focus 3 pot 1.5lt Diesel that I am driving now is much better, but I feel like I am driving around in a dinasor.

In the real world apart from the Tesla model S and X what other current EV’s have a 100Kwh battery?
I am sure that every one would specify a 100Kwh battery over a 74kwh battery. Watt’s there not to like? Apart from Tesla batteries cost $190/kWh. (~£150) So unless you really really need that extra range it’s money down the drain. I am sure it will change the cost of batteries are going down and energy densities are increasing, plenty of predictions that an Ev will be cheaper than an equivalent internal combustion vehicle, within the next decade. But today a range of 200 miles or so will be more than fine for the majority of drivers.
