We are new to caravanning and are looking for a car, prior to buying a caravan. We're hoping to buy a 4 berth, fixed bed, end washroom type caravan and looking at a MTPLM of 1497kg max. My husband seems to thing we're lmited to a Volvo XC60 or a BMW X5. What does everyone else pull this sort of weight with? We're finding it difficult to find either of these cars 2nd hand and within our price range. (We're looking at diesel, automatics) Any advice would be very much appreciated.

What is your price range? Do you have a B+E licence?

There are lots of cars that will tow 1500kg easily and safely. Do you want manual or automatic? How many seats do you need? Do you need space for dogs? Give us some more information and we'll be able to give you some ideas.

Thank you. Yes we have a B&E licence. We need a 5 seater, automatic car and have no dog. Price wise, I'd like to spend no more than about 14K. I realise that to find a second hand Volvo XC60 with less than 60k mileage, then my price limit is a bit unreasonable. My husband is very organised and has done lots of research and a spreadsheet, based on towing weights but seems to have narrowed the selection down to the Volvo despite the fact that I feel there must be other car options open to us? I appreciate that we need the right car for the job but surely there's more than one?

There are lots of cars that would do the job, off the top of my head you could look at some of the Mondeo range, Kuga, Kia Sportage and Sorrento, Hyundai Santa Fe, Ford Galaxy and S-Max.

I tow 1500kg with a SsangYong Korando and you could get a very low mileage one for your budget and still have some of the manufacturer's warranty left on it. You also get quite a high spec for your money.

I wonder why you have ended up with such a short shortlist, there are lots of cars that will do the job, it's just a question of finding one at the right price for you.

We are researching exactly the same sort of set up as you are. The skoda Kodiaq also looks good. Add that to your short list

Jacfrosty, the Kodiaq would be good but is outside the budget here. If you can find one for £14000 please let me know.

With a limited budget buy the youngest car which meets your requirements.

Don't go for older and complicated BMW X5s etc, expensive when new means expensive to fix forever.

Also do plenty of research into the type of automatic fitted to the car.

Ford did use Powershifts, they are such a problem Ford no longer fit them. Best avoided.

VW, Skoda etc use DSG. A lottery and they do need regular fluid changes. Ensure it has been done, if not factor in having it done as part of any deal.

Trading my MY13 XC60 D4 SE Lux Nav into Cardiff Volvo soon, 41500 genuine miles. Keep an eye on their site.

Have you looked at Hyundai Tucsons aswell as aformentioned santa fe's. We towed a sterling elite similar weight to what you are after with a dielsel tucson 17 plate and towed it very well and plenty of cabin room. Good luck in your search.

A 1500kg caravan can be comfortably towed by a medium-sized SUV from just about any car company in the world. Ford Kuga, Land Rover Freelander, Audi Q5, VW Tiguan, Kia Sorrento to name but a few.

If you can live without the higher ride height of an SUV - and you can - many large estates or MPVs such as Ford Mondeo, Galaxy or S-Max, VW Passat or Sharan, BMW 5-series, Volvo V70 or Audi A6 will also do the job just fine and should be cheaper to buy.

Unless you're planning to do a very high mileage there's no real need to cap what you're looking for at 60k. Most modern diesel engines are capable of a lot more than that provided they're properly maintained, and a higher mileage with a full service history could be a much better buy than a lower mileage without one.
