For what it's worth, I tow a 4 berth van with a 1.2 litre petrol engine, but that churns out 130bhp & 230Nm torque, both car and van are relatively light, van MTPLM 1310kg. I did a lot of number crunching before buying the van to ensure the outfit was usable, I'm very happy with the combination. It's not dramatically quick off the line, but it's no liability either, it'll cruise in 6th gear, overtake lorries at a respectable rate, climb every hill I've thrown at it (Wales & Cumbria, so not exactly flat!), and seems more than willing to try and break the national speed limit for a solo car let alone a car-trailer (no I don't drive it that fast, but it's willing!), it also returns around 30mpg average, so obviously I'm not thrashing it to the red line all the time to get/keep it rolling.

So as a kind of answer, maybe! - worth throwing some proper numbers at us to get a more specific answer.
