I have worked in the recovery industry most of my working life,
My advise would be firstly decide which cover suits your circumstances ie weights & dimensions etc,
Then decide what you need from your cover,
If you are expecting your car to be diagnosed & fixed at the side of the road then RAC or the AA would be your best bet, their patrols are trained to a lot higher standard & they tend to carry a lot more diagnostic equipment & spare parts than most sub contractors,
If you are just wanting to be recovered to a garage or your home for you to repair then Green Flag (or one of the others that solely use contractors ie Britannia) would be better suited ,
Obviously this is not always the case as both the AA & RAC use the same sub contractors as Green Flag during busy times
Good advice, thanks. I was thinking along the same lines myself.
I've called out Green Flag (Mayday) twice in the past 10 years and each time they have arrived within the hour of being called and each time they have fixed the problem within 20 minutes. I guess it goes to show that it depends on who you ask as to what response you get. I only left the AA after 25years when they decided that they didn't want to cover my caravan (7.9m) and trying to charge me vastly more than I would have paid as a new member.

Thank you for sharing your experience of Green Flag, birder99.
Think we will probably go with them as the comments from people on here who have used them are positive.
We have used Green Flag for years. They have helped us with both the car and also car and caravan together. You won't be disappointed if you choose then, and reasonably priced too. Forgot, we had a dog too, absolutely no problem, quite a talking point on the way home!
I was offered free cover when I recently had my Ford serviced, so I enquired about the caravan length and the 7 m quoted previously doesn't include the A frame

yes ok so they will carry your car and pull the caravan, but and a big but is that you would be over weight for most of their drivers, did you realise that? for example if my car broke down (weight of 2.25 ton) and then the caravan of 1800kgs behind it, and I seriously doubt that any of those drivers have the necessary licence to get that lot home
Well, after much consideration we've signed up with Green Flag (for UK only) but fingers crossed we won't get to use them!
Thanks to all for your advice and comments.

Not so,
Your rig could be recovered on a 7.5t GVW vehicle so the driver would only need a category C1E licence to drive that lot,
However most professional recovery companies now use 10, 12 & even 15t slidebeds & most drivers (myself included) will have CE licence to be able to do their job legally
Don’t mind at all. It was a very reasonable (we considered) £39.20 for rescue, recovery and home cover for the car (rather than personal cover which covers you for any car you happen to be in). We apparently got a discount for taking out cover online, which was very straightforward, also very easy to get quotes for the various options provided.
