We have bought a motorhome and my wife needs her motorbility car, are we allowed to tow her motorbility car?

It depends on the towing capacity of the motorhome and the weight of the car. If you are going to mainland Europe the car will have to be on a trailer so the weight of that will have to be taken into account as well, if you are staying in the UK you may be able to tow with an a frame but Motability are unlikely to allow you to modify the car to use the frame.

Check the towing weight of the motorhome and the weight of the car and see which options are likely to be available to you. If you want to use an a frame check with Motability to see if they will let you have the car modified.

After a certain age I believe weights will effect a persons licence requirements.
From memory at 70 and you need a medical to have a combined weight over 3,500 kg

If you are getting close to that age its worth checking

After 12 years motorhoming we finally gave it up as a bad job and got a caravan. OH has mobility issues so we were having to take the car as well and we were limited in that she could only drive the car relatively short distances.
It used to be a 3.5 ton motorhome with 2.8 litre engine and a 2 litre zafira tourer, she needs the zafira for ease of access so a smaller car like our seat leon was out of the question.
Now we have a zifira tourer towing a two birth caravan and it uses less diesel than the motorhome alone did so all problems solved (and the access and usability of the caravan is better too)

Personally, and it is only my opinion (before someone bites my head off)
I would never consider towing a car with a motorhome
I think it just looks silly

You don’t need medical for vehicle/trailer over 3.5t combined at 70 you need medical to retain your over 3.5t vehicle entitlement ie motorhome of over 3.5tonne MaM. Most motorhomes are max 3.5t only the large A class vehicles are over that.

Not strictly true! My Rapido 7095DF is a coach built but 3700kgs MGW and an 1800kg towing limit. I had to renew my C1E licence at 70 and have a medical + eye test. The medical was a joke! Cost me £120 but if you can walk in the door unaided, chances are you’re ok! Never even checked my BP, just looked at my medical records.... I guess the medics need the extra income....

Many of the motorhomes rated at 3.5t have tiny payloads so most will be running overweight. Most can be uprated by up to a tonne by simply having the plate changed. Obviously they are rated at 3.5t to allow septuagenarians to drive them without needing a medical.

It also allows drivers who passed their tests after 1997 to drive them as they are also limited to 3.5t unless they take another test.
