How it kind of works is that they make tow bars backward compatible but not forward compatible, which is jip.
Having said that, you may be the lucky exception.
I had the same issue through around eight models of VW Golfs, from 2006 to 2018, as the firm used to provide a new car on lease every two or three years.
Not only was it a pain with the tow bar, but even the roof rack set up needed changing multiple times.
Hope you have more luck than I did.
