A friend of mine asked me the other day if his 3.0 diesel Audi A7 will be a good tow car. I tried to Google it to assist him but there is next to no information with regards if anyone has ever used one.
I guess it's not the usual car for towing a caravan with it being a sporty looking hatchback but tow bars are available ? Does anyone have any knowledge to share on the matter ?
I am sure that the 3ltr A7 diesel will make an excellent tow car.
I have a E350 merc estate which tows well.
One thing I did not check before buying it was the tow hitch max weight. On the E350 it is only 84kg which is what limits the towing capacity of the car. This is due to the distance from the back axle to the tow ball.
I would check this figure out on the A7 before buying.
ps.
If you check this, don't get confused about the capacity of the tow bar itself (this will be a lot greater) You need to know how much down force the suspension will allow to be exerted on the tow hitch.
He has the car woodman. It's just a sports hatch and I would have thought due to this it's not made for heavy towing and could cause problems ???
I'm no mechanic though so what do I know ??
Lovely car but wouldn't have thought it was built for towing ???

Never had an A7 but did consider one about 3 years ago - ended up with another A6 estate which was 2 litre TDI - which had no issues towing. The one I looked at had a tow limit of 1800kg if I remember correctly and nose weight go 85kg. I was only put off by extra maintenance costs over the A6 especially tyres and worse depreciation. I would say that the one thing to be wary about is clearance - it is quite a low slung car.
Peel away the sporty looking hatchback and the Audi A7 is mechanically almost identical to the A6 estate, as well as sharing many components with other VW group cars. Provided of course that you plan to tow a sensible weight, it should be absolutely fine as a tow car.
We use the poor man's version (VW Arteon) and love it. It feels exactly the same as a Passat to drive and tow with - which is no bad thing - but offers the bonus of being quite a lot better looking.
