Can anyone help? I’m changing my tow car and have been looking at the Ssangyong Korando, I notice that some are 147 bhp and some are 176 bhp, will the 147 bhp be enough to tow a van up to 2 tonne?
The Korando has a max tow of 2000kgs on most models but I don't have the early brochure available at the moment to check on the 147bhp version. The kerbweight of the Korando models is around 1750kg so you would be towing at well over 100%. The 147bhp version was only available for a short time so it's usually easier to find a higher powered version. If your budget will stretch further have a look for a 2.2 engine version from about 2015 onwards, the same amount of power but much smoother and even nicer to tow with.
The review in the above link is for the new 2019 model Korando which has a 1.6 diesel engine or a petrol alternative and is completely different to the version mentioned by the op which would be a 2012-2014 model. It's a nice car but unlikely to be a good match for a 2000kg caravan.
The new Korando 1.6 diesel has a 136bhp engine, the 2.2 from 2015-2019 is 178bhp. The earlier 2.0 engine had a 147bhp or a 176bhp output depending on the year.
I tow a Pursuit 550-4 with a 2018 Korando 2.2 diesel auto. It pulls the caravan with ease. Fuel consumption is low 40s solo and high 29s towing. Overall very pleased with the car.
