Hi all..

Further to my recent query on the "Caravans.." section,(re: We're toying with getting a small(2berth),cheapish caravan),I'd like to ask some advice about a suitable tow car.

The OH likes the look of the Skoda Yeti (I'd "like" a 4x4 because I'd be towing the 'van on/off umpteen, usually muddy, festivals sites each year).
BUT as 95% of it's use would be solo, and only doing short,local-ish journeys, we are considering a petrol?
The balance has tipped even more towards petrol, since the likes of *Bristol has announced that it is bringing in a diesel ban between certain hours.
(*Bristol is somewhere that we have a few "city breaks" each year).

So...has anyone had any experience of a petrol(1.8?)Yeti 4x4 occasionally towing a small(as of yet, exact weight unknown) caravan?.

Thanks

Edit; Just had a bit of a trawl online (re: petrol Yetis) and found a Skoda forum on which they had discussed some very expensive failures with the 1.8 TSI engines (discussion back in 2013)?
Before I sign up to yet another forum, that I'll never use again has anyone any knowledge of this? ..is it just the usual internet forum scaremonger-y?

Having owned Yeti's for 11 years and towed all those years I will say that they make excellent tow cars but I would keep well away from the 1.8 petrol. Yes that engine has had lots of problems, most of them very expensive, and some of them terminal.

If you have to have a petrol and are only intending towing a small van then the 1.4 should meet your needs, but the 4x4 is extremely rare.

Amazing that someone who advises against the 1.8, demonstrating knowledge of problems with VAG petrol engines then goes on to recommend the 1.4TSi which should have been killed off years before it eventually was. If anything it is worse than the 1.8 and was changed numerous times to try and fix the issues, they failed.

The replacement 1.5 tsi is also a dogs dinner.

Thanks both..

As we would've probably been looking at "just" a £5-6000, and maybe the best part of 10 year old vehicle, are we saying that a petrol Yeti of that era/price point is best avoided then?

A pity if that is the case because they seem to get very good reviews.
(but obviously not from those whose not-very-old engines have gone pop! )

Back to the search...

Thanks again

Have a look for a Octavia Estate 4x4 2.0TDi, solo around 65mpg, towing around 33-38mpg depending on the roads. You also get plenty of load space in the back. The Haldex system is good on muddy fields, however I have Vredestine Quatrac 5 all season tyres on, M+S & 3 peaked snowflake rated. I tow a 2 berth caravan mtplm 1,318kg which give me a 88% tow ratio

The club site in Baltic Wharf will be closing very soon. They are building houses. Plans being drawn up now. So don't let Bristol's out of step idiotic proposal influence you too much.

Cumberland Road is currently closed as the path collapsed into the "New Cut" (now the river) but access to the caravan site is still available from the Cumberland Basin end.

Sorry,I should have been clearer re; Bristol. When we go down there,to meet up with friends,we tend to use B&Bs and travelodges.
It wasn't just the above which made us favour petrol but also our primarily short-journey usage.

Purchasing a 10 year old car is always a gamble.

One advantage is if it has a low number of owners who have all treat it well any problems are likely to be down to age and use and not faulty original components.

The 1.5 TSI engine suffers from kangarooing when cold,VAG have acknowledged the problem and issued a software update but there are lots of owners still suffering from the problem!

So it would appear that all the petrol engines have issues

I would go for a diesel for towing anytime. Lots of torque and good economy.
We have towed with turbo petrols in the past (Saab) which were great but thirsty.

Our first tugs were petrol 1.6 and 2.0 non turbo.(Datsun, Vauxhall and Saab).
We had a smaller van, at the time, petrol was cheaper and diesel cars less common.
We have a nearly new Mini with 1.5 turbo petrol, it pulls really well in all gears and is economical, but its not a towcar.

If cities ban diesels I won't go there if we are in the area with our caravan. Unl3ss we can use public transport such as park and ride.
Oh dear, no deliveries or buses to part of Bristol as they use diesel vehicles. Duh!

Only the VAG group with the 1.5 petrol, others ie Honda don't seem to have any problems!

The total ban only applies to privately owned diesel cars, buses and delivery vehicles will be allowed to enter but will have to pay to enter the zone.

If the buses are anything like the one I was following a couple of days ago which was emitting small clouds of smoke from the exhaust, it just goes to prove that public transport with diesel engines may not be as environmentally clean as they try to make out they are.

That won't matter at all Tango. The important thing is they will be paying the council £90 per day each. So fares will rise to encourage people onto them.
