I have a standard driving licence and was wondering what size of caravan I can tow on a on a normal driving licence. I have 2000 Honda crv and was wanting to get a folding caravan with a weight of about 850kg. Any Idea on what I can tow on my current license? Thanks

Assuming that you took your test after 1997, you don't have B+E.

That limits you to an all up weight (car and trailer/caravan) of 3,500kg.

Look at your car's VIN plate (driver's or passenger's door frame).
The first number is the Gross Vehicle Weight in kg (aka MAX PERMISSIBLE MASS).
If you subtract that number from 3,500 you will get the heaviest trailer that your licence will allow you to tow.

That deals with the limits imposed by your licence, but do check what the towing limits are for your particular car and gearbox type (look in the car's manual).

Some of the dual-clutch automatics have a fairly low towing weight limit (but I can't see that being a problem with a 850kg folder).

I believe you can drive up to 3,500kg maximum combined weight of your car and any trailer, so I'm fairly sure that a folding caravan with a total weight of 850kg would be ok. You will obviously have to check the weight of your car, but I'm sure it will be much less than 2,650kg.

However, there are others on here more familiar than me with current legislation. I passed my test in 1967, so I can drive up to 7,500kg.

When people say 3500kg maximum they mean 3500kg combined plated maximum weights of car and trailer. Whether they are full or empty makes no difference. That is for the licence requirement.
