Morning all. Am considering changing my Tiguan 2.0 240 PS to an Audi A4 or A6 Avant, 2.0 or 3.0 Ltr S-line. Tiguan fine car but has the 20" wheels and they don't drive they crash so going back to an Audi, Having had a Q5 before was a far more comfortable vehicle to drive for me but rather have an estate car than a SUV now.

Query is I have a Swift Major EB single axle. Comments from others is the A4 under weight, but that doesn't add up and is too low in S-line form and the Allroad a better bet. However I love the look of the s-line and only take van out on the odd occasion and not far so 95% of the time is driven on it's own.

Query is to ask opinions on this as don't want to make a very expensive mistake again as I did with the Tiguan.

Thanks for any advice from other owners of these fine cars.

Cheers....

Hi Peggy159

In the past I have towed with a Audi a6 allroad 3ltr 286 HP Quattro, and I’ve got to say is a great car for towing.

I now tow with a Audi A6 s line 3ltr 286 HP Quattro, again a good car to tow with.

Only difference is the suspension, the allroad is air suspension and the s line is coil springs, also the s line sits lower to the ground.

The caravan that I tow is a swift sprite major sb 1451 kgs in weight.

Hope this helps.

Hello Pathfinder,

Thank you so much for excellent reply and addressed exactly the issue that concerned me. I think the Audi 3.0 engine is a remarkable beast and had one in the SQ5 and would enjoy the same output in a saloon.
It was the height off the ground that concerned me too as S-Line so much lower but you say this is fine will go with that. Have found an A6 avant with the 3.0 engine which looks beautiful and may go and have a look.

We swapped the other way about 18 months ago... from an A6 Sline 2.0 tai estate to a Q5. No worries about the A6 side height unless you frequent some farm tracks for CLs. Only reason for our change to Q5 was I now have two replacement knees not just the one and the Q5 is much easier to get into and out of. We also used to tow with an A4TDIi estate (170bhp) with no problem towing a Pegasus at 1500kg.
Avoid the 20" wheels - 18"/19" are better but I find the 18" give more protection to the alloys and are significantly cheaper to replace tyres.

Cheers Grahame,

Understand your reasoning there, I loved the Q5 but want a newer car and just am not a fan of the 2017 onwards facelift. I like campsites with facilities so not sure we ever been on a CL and any slippy stuff the quattro of the Q5 handled great, including a very boggy field with van on the back. Not sure is the 3.0 may be over kill to tow with but for the sheer fun of the power and the sound and minimal MPG variance worth it.

So I think using a s-line to tow is viable based on reading and the search begins...

I have towed with an A6 Avant 2.0 TDI for five years and love it. My son has the A4, but doesn't tow. The A6 is far more comfortable but I went for the SE rather than the S-Line for ride quality and tow bar height. My caravan is slightly lighter at 1360kg but towing is effortless. I'm sure the 3.0 will be even better but the smaller engine is plenty quick enough for me and costs are lower. I have never had any problems with grip using front wheel drive only, though I do carry pads for the wheels just in case.

I love the A6 so much I have given up looking for a replacement now, just keeping this one.

Thank Tomtomfan,

Great right up and am pleased to hear your happy with your A6.
I have took the plunge and bought a 3.0 Tdi (like the zip) avant quattro and collect in next week and am pretty pleased with the prospect of ownership already. Ticks all the boxes and am sure the ride height should not too badly affect towing experience or stability of the rig, particularly as it has a weight gain too.

Happy man so far....
