I have my eye on 2 sites for the near future, one just east of Corby and one west of Ely. Whichever ay you look at it, the route involves the A1123 through St Ives. Has anyone towed along it and what's it like?
An easy solution to judging route through almost anywhere you don't know is Google Street View!
You can photographically 'fly' through your route remotely on screen to judge pinch points, tight corners etc. before actually trying to drive it. I use it all the time to check routes off major roads and/or through towns, and especially access down country lanes to actual camp sites.
I used to use that too when I drove double decker buses on wedding hires. I could check things like bridge heights and tight corners, as all too often the hirer would say that a route was fine because they had driven it in their car, but when I checked it out I found a bridge that was 12 feet clearance and the bus was 14'6"! Or there was a 6'6" width clearance for a bus 8' wide. Google streetview is very useful.
We were down that way over New Year there were roadworks on the A14 and the motorway which had us pulling our hair out. I’d double check the road work status too if I were you.
We spent new year at Stroud Hill Park at Pidley it was brilliant. There’s a restaurant on site and the facilities were very good and it was handy for Ely, Huntington and has easy access to major roads.
Just go round the st Ives bypass it's the best route the center is not really for cars. I not sure you would get a car and van through the middle but there is no need as it's got a bypass. The A14 is mainly done we went straight through.
The A1 and A14 is much better now that they have been widened.
