Hi all, looking for some advice please on the best route to tow a caravan through the Swiss Alps. We are thinking of using the Brenner pass, has anyone done this and if so is it not to hard to do, ie, not to hard on the car (climbing/descending)
If anyone has other routes through the Alps this would be greatly appreciated . We will be heading north on our route after visiting Nice. Thank you in advance for any info you may have.
When I last went over the Brenner Pass it was in Austria? The Brenner is a reasonably easy pass and a rather beautiful route between Austria and Italy. The only steepish bit is the short stretch up to the toll booth from Innsbruck otherwise the inclines are reasonably gentle.
We quite regularly tow through Switzerland. Your best route is probably up through Italy and through the San Gotthard Tunnel. Perfectly reasonable drive towing. However, you will have to buy two vignettes, one for your car and one for your caravan. These vignettes, compared to French toll roads, are quite good value (well, at least I think so!).
There is an alternative route through Chamonix, not sure what this route would be like.
I have never done the Brener pass in a car, but a few years ago me and a couple of mates toured Europe on our bikes. We did most of the E45 European Route which for about 110km of it's length is made up of the A13 Brenner Autobahn from Innsbruck to Modena through the Brenner Pass. It was one of the best roads I have ridden or driven on in terms of scenery, a real pleasure to ride for most of the time. However, at certain times it can be extremely busy and slow, with long delays caused by the huge numbers of HGV's that use the route as well as the hordes of Shed Draggers . I don't know if it is still the case, but when I travelled along the A13 there were extra tolls to pay at the toll plaza at the Schönberg im Stubaital junction or by a Videomaut pre-pay system, but it was exempt from the usual toll vignette on Austrian motorways.
