I've been told that the Volvo D5 engine (2.4 diesel) with 180 BHP & 350 nm. torque is the best model to opt for in terms of pulling power and reliability.

We have had 2 XC60s (from new)...one was D5 and a D3. I think the engines are the same on the 90s. Both were Auto, and I would have either again.

i think the latter was only 130bhp, and it would still be first off the lights if i wanted to, and plenty of power to spare when pulling twin axle.

I might be wrong but the xc90 is a heavier car, so not quite the same, but you wont go wrong with any XC

I don't tow but was looking at an XC90 at a local motor show last summer and when looking at the instruments noticed the reading for fuel use on last journey... 16mpg ... dont think I have managed that low with my Lexus unless really booting it

I used to tow with a V70 2.5 turbo diesel automatic, and it was a great tow car. Fuel consumption was generally in the 40+ mpg area, nearer to 50mpg on a long run, and it didn't drop a huge amount when towing. My caravan isn't very heavy, but the wind resistance would be just as great as with a heavier van.

I would only ever tow with an automatic, it's all I've had for decades anyway. Much more relaxing, particularly in traffic.

Colin

You do need to lift the driven wheels off the ground if you tow an automatic any distance, but how often do you do it? Even then, you can still tow one a short distance without lifting the wheels. Come to think of it, I can't remember the last time I towed one of my automatics and I've had them for decades. I wouldn't have anything else.
