I gave up taking notice of this sort of thing years ago after a survey put VW Sharan, Seat Alhambra & Ford Galaxy at top middle & bottom of a reliability survey. At the time these 3 cars were identical & made on the same production line with only the badges different.

Likewise Billy, I don't take much notice of them.

I've owned Citroens for nigh on 30 years, now on my 3rd successive one, totalled in the region or 380k miles and never had a breakdown or spent a penny on them over and above standard maintenance costs. I've kept them into old age, I've worked them hard, they've been up off road tracks in UK and Spain that only 4x4's normally venture (that hydopneumatic suspension raised to it's high setting copes with almost anything!), when I've finally sold them, they are near immaculate and fully working, certainly not clapped out old bangers! Few brands are as derided as Citroen in these surveys, but I've never had cause for complaint, and as a professional engineer, I have high standards and expectations.

Friends have had Vauxhalls, another much derided brand, but they have accumulated huge mileages (heading towards twice round the clock on a couple!) with no problems.

Then again, I've had friends with much heralded brands like Toyota, Honda, VW group cars, Volvo, BMW, Mercedes etc. and they have been catastrophic disasters, endlessly failing and costing small fortunes to repair and/or spending much time in the dealers.

These surveys are only a small highly biased snapshot, and not really of any great worth.

I've had great Citroens with the old school turbo diesel that were bulletproof.

I had an early HDi that was a nightmare.

But totally agree about these charts...

I've also had faultless Fiats and pre VW Skoda that were trouble free.

And horrible BMWs, rusty VWs and Mercedes; and don't get me started on VW Transporters!!!

BMW, Mercedes etc don't come out well in this survey and others in reliability anyway.

The ones that appear in the worse list are all those that have a reputation for unreliable and big costs when they go wrong which has been born out by their claims records.

We are on our second Jeep Grand Cherokee and no major issues with either. Our 1996 Corolla 1300 is still going strong and only outlay has been servicing & tyres.

However over a lifespan of 10 years a EV costs a lot more than a vehicle using fossil fuels and spare parts!

Don't see how that works! The mechanical bits of modern cars are incredibly reliable, when can you think of a purely mechanical failure in recent years! It's the electrics/electronics that give all the problems!

A vehicle is a nightmare location for electrical components, wide temperature variations, exposure to damp and corrosive elements (sea salt and winter road salt etc.), extreme vibrations and G forces etc., a wide voltage supply range (from nearly flat to charging battery).

And as pointed out, Tesla's don't look so good, and that's top end BEV!

The Tesla Model “S” was there first mass production car that they ever built, so that is not a fair comparison, especially the early models, the Model “3” and the Model “Y” are at a different level altogether.

If Sandy Munro says the Model “Y” is a good car and recommend’s it then Tesla must have now got it nailed.

I am already saving up for a three year old Model “Y” and plan to purchase one in 2026 when I hit retirement, until then I will have to make do with company fossil cars, but I don’t care as I am not paying for it, apart from a little BiK Tax.

The survey is from a warranty company so I assume based on how much they spend out on repairs? It would be difficult from what is probably a smallish sample to establish whether the problems were widespread. It always puzzles me a bit why top brands don't give longer warranties although I see that with a Landrover the warranty can be extended to 10 years/100000 miles,but no idea how much it costs. Probably because they don't think the original buyers will keep the car more than three years? I think I will stick with my Kia's and a seven year warranty included in the price.

Te movimg parts are a tiny elememt of warranty claims.

I have had circa 20 cars. Most have had at least one warranty claim, some more. The only one which was exclusive to a fossil fuel engine was an EGR valve.

Everything else could have happened to any car. Wheelbearings, brake disks, aircon parts, door locks, leaking seals, failed windows. BEV will suffer the same. Tesla's are pretty poor for quality.

there are some pretty expensive things that can break on an EV, the on board charger, HVAC system, battery cooling system....likely they are more reliable, but if something does go wrong... £££. I bought a used Kia Soul EV for the long Kia warranty, my wife has a Nissan Leaf which is out of warranty but that has proved to be a very reliable car. Not sure I’d want a Tesla or BMW electric car outside of its warranty period!
