hi there can anyone out there give me any info on the hyundai santa fe as a tow car. i am looking for a tow car just now .really struggling to decide between volvo kia sorento or santa fe maybay landrover freelander. its a nightmare i had a kia sorento before really liked it.

any information advice most most welcome

If you have already had the Kia Sorento then you will already know what the Hyundai Santa Fe is like as they are basically the same vehicle.

The Santa Fe and Sorento share same engines and running gear, so very similar cars.

We have had both. We changed a 2012 Sorento KX2 for a new 2016 Santa Fe Wiggons ltd edition.Its a manual.

We liked the Sorento but chose the Hyundai because it was a better deal.
Its a top of the range model with extras, of which they made 500.

It tows our Bailey Unicorn Cadiz effortlessly. Its mainly used for towing now and usually does 2 France trips a year plus use here.

Solo we have seen 40mpg towing as good as 30mpg, normally round 25 to 26.
Reliability has been excellent as is service from the dealership.

Its very comfortable and well equipped and has more than plenty of power.
It has pretty low mileage as we are retired.   5 years unlimited mileage warranty gives peace of mind.

thanks for that . never knew kia and Hyundai where so similar. I wonder if they had the same problems ie inner sill rusting fuel tank delamination. should I look to go automatic or manual ??

Most folk tend to go for auto. More relaxed tow.

Bought a 2012 Santa Fe in February but haven't had a chance to tow with it yet Great reviews as a towcar.
Mine is a 2.2 Premium automatic with all the toys and looking forward to towing later this year (maybe).
The delamination of fuel tanks was an issue with earlier Sorentos, but never heard of SF's having that problem.
Now that I've an auto, I doubt that I'd change back to a manual again!

The fuel tank issue was the first generation Sorento which stopped in 09.
We had an 09 great car, but an old school 4x4 with seperate chassis, low and high range transfer box etc.
The model that replaced it is lighter and completely different. The current Sorrento/Santa Fe.
Hyundai own Kia.

Bsaically, the Santa Fe and the Sorento are the same underneath, engine, gearbox, running gear etc. Once you've had an auto, you'll never go back to a manual, both towing and solo.

You don't say what age/budget you're looking at, but the first of the 5 seater Sorento 'new' models, without SLS, had a poor reputation for towing. At some point, all Sorentos became 7 seater, with SLS, whereas Santa Fes carried on with 5 seater, non SLS, and 7 seaters with.

I went from an old model Sorento, with the low box, to a 2014 auto 7 seater Santa Fe, the difference was night and day! I'm very happy with the Santa Fe, although it hasn't been without it's probems!!

Ive had a new Santa Fe since 2015 its a premium se. Its done 38000miles. Only work done on it apart from servicing.. New brake pads at 35k and new tyres at 37k. Im very happy with it but still thinking about getting another but can't bring myself to pay the road tax on a new one as the list price is over £40k.

Don't believe the claims that they will do 40mpgl Mine has averaged 28.5 to the gallon over the time I've had it. (about 25mpg when towing) I tow about 1000 miles a year.

The onboard computer shows me averaging about 30mpg when running about the place, can go up as high as about 42 on a long run.

But it all depends on what speed you drive at on the open road, I keep to the speed limits from a consumption point of view.

And that's with an auto diesel.
